@aral Hard disagree. This is like saying email isn't decentralized because Gmail exists. Decentralized =/= homogeneously distributed.
If .social disappeared overnight my server's federated timeline would hardly change much. And another large server would quickly step in to fill their role as "newbies' first instance".
IMO it's all about any server being replaceable, even the largest "flagship" instance.
They are using QR codes with random color schemes so you can't use blurhash filters. And there is no text other than username direct mentions
Spam usernames are random strings, on poorly moderated servers as usual
Anyone have recommendations for mitigation?
If you don't have an admin team that can handle properly auditing account registrations and dealing with reports quickly, I strongly recommend disabling open registrations on your servers for now
If an employer ever asks you to resign, tell them "no".
There is no benefit to resigning unless you have another job lined up already.
Make them fire you. Get your unemployment benefits. Make sure you are legally protected in case of malfeasance. Resigning undermines all of that.
This message brought to you by AWS telling workers to return to office 5-days-a-week by commuting or relocating, or they should resign.
Again, the answer is "no, you'll have to fire me."
EDIT: To clarify, in most areas "fired" and "let go" are not legally meaningful terms and can be used interchangeably. The important term is "for cause" or not. So don't commit misconduct to get fired. Poor job performance is typically not a "for cause" reason, nor is failure to accept changes like RTO
Alright fedi-friends, help me come up with a regex so I can filter non-English posts from my timeline while keeping English posts that are marked as non-English because the account usually posts in their native language and didn't bother to change the language setting when posting in English?
REGEDIT => HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Search => New DWORD (32-bit) value => Name it BingSearchEnabled => Set it to 0 => Type anything in the start menu and feel the wind in your digital hair as you fly through cyberspace at speeds unknown to lesser beings
Mastodon is built differently. Just like the birdsite, you won't see every toot in existence but the 'why' is different. On birdsite, an #algorithm decided. Here, it's your #social connections that truly, organically determine what you see.
It works because it gives you control over who you interact with, and the people you interact with shape the timelines of you and all your neighbors.
By nature of the fact that ActivityPub is an open standard, the fediverse contains everything you can imagine, from best to worst. Truth Social is technically fedi. There are literal neo-Nazi fedi servers. There are servers dedicated to CSAM, and servers created and torn down within 30 minutes just to spam someone they hate
Operating a fedi server properly requires work and diligence. And a poorly configured server can leave you vulnerable to severe repercussions
Like, in both of the cases where I've forced someone to go into a managed-care environment, they were at imminent risk. In one case they were bashing their head against a metal door after deteriorating over the course of 48 hours. In the other case, they had intentionally cut up the soles of their feet in a drunken, misguided effort to hide a relapse into alcoholism and self-harm.
In a third case, I was able to convince the person to check themselves in, after they told me they had tried to drown themselves in the bath and failed.
@ryanhoulihan And in all three cases I did my best to help them myself first; only resorted to managed care when it became obvious it was way out of my league.
@ryanhoulihan I've only ever forced someone into a medical facility when I believed they were: a) a danger to themselves, b) behaving inconsistently with what I considered their normal mental state, and c) I could not care for them by myself.
If you're my friend and you're experiencing an acute depressive or manic episode, I'd rather you be angry and alive than free and dead :AquaShrug:
For context, I support assisted suicide for those with things like chronic conditions that cannot be treated, or those with irreconcilably low quality of life (terminal illness, unable to care for themselves, etc)
An open letter from over 1,000 Jewish writers and scholars warning that criticism of Israel is not inherently antisemitic, and arguing that it is produces real harm. It's also fundamentaly at odds with the teachings of Judaism itself
This is your periodic reminder that the title of the anime "Kill la Kill" is a three-layered pun that is reflected in the content which rests on top of another pun.
“to kill” (キル kiru) “to cut” (切る kiru) “to wear” (着るkiru) "fascist" sounds like "fashion" (and both are loan words in Japanese)
And thus we get an anime about overthrowing a fascist regime where the school uniforms grant super-powers, and need to be cut from the bodies of the wearers, using a giant scissor blade
