Do you use #Wikipedia, #Wiktionary, #WikimediaCommons, #Wikidata, or other #Wikimedia resources? The #WikimediaFoundation has just disbanded an entire team of staff who work closely with volunteer contributors, coincidentally while some of those same staff have been working to form a union. Volunteers from various projects are planning collective action in solidarity with the workers. On the English-language Wikipedia, this action might include an editorial strike (no new content) or making the wiki read-only. #union#solidarity
While I have fedizens' attention: I tweaked Wikipedia's instructions for article subjects to be a little more fediverse-friendly. Does anyone know if the procedure for @pixelfed captions is identical to Instagram? I don't use either of those. /cc @dansup
My #commandline and #tui everyday productivity workflow is getting more solid: #taskwarrior, #jrnl, #offlineimap, #notmuch, #neomutt. I was using some of these tools one or two decades ago until I was tempted or forced onto GUI and cloud solutions by various projects. But now I can access my terminals from anywhere thanks to my #tailscale#vpn – no need for other people's clouds.
One of these days I'll write a proper blog post or series about this setup.
@nacly@_elena There's a bunch of us trying to make Wikimedia projects more inclusive! But we can always work harder at making our spaces friendlier for newcomers (sound familiar? 😉)
> And to be clear, collaboration doesn’t require slapping on an armband and goose-stepping behind a demagogue. Nice people made the best Nazis, as Naomi Shulman wrote eight years ago:
>> My mother was born in Munich in 1934, and spent her childhood in Nazi Germany surrounded by nice people who refused to make waves. When things got ugly, the people my mother lived alongside chose not to focus on “politics,” instead busying themselves with happier things. They were lovely, kind people who turned their heads as their neighbors were dragged away.
Via @jayeless, an analysis of this week's tempest in the #IndieWeb. @chipotle's angle helped me see why I was initially taken aback by the tone of some of @adam's posts. I've always skewed 'genteel' and it's taken me nearly a lifetime to realise that's because I'd been domesticated by the colonisers. I'm probably always going to have that unconscious filter in front of me so I'm glad there are people like Adam who will be rude and shouty on behalf of his customers and community members who don't share his privilege. https://social.lol/@adam/113886244329692234
