Although, I have never experienced anything positive when being part of a union (as a previous union worker) -- I will not stand in the way of others forming unions if they feel it could benefit them and others.
The war on drugs was lost a long time ago and making something illegal will not stop people from using if they wish to use. It will however, often discourage those who may need help from seeking help, fearing criminal prosecution. Furthermore, previously legalizing marijuana has brought in billions while also creating jobs.
There are no more reasons to use, Mozilla Firefox.
Better Privacy?
Mozilla is working closely with Facebook, Google, and is now a market research and advertising company. Furthermore, they're now including every possible AI in their web browser, which calls out even when disabled.
Better Ad blocking?
Mozilla is an ad company and recently gave the uBlock development team a hard time. uBlock Lite is not coming back to Firefox, and the uBlock developer is considering not to develop two builds in the future. Furthermore, even with an ad-blocker, by default, Firefox now monitors ad performance.
Better web browsing?
With a single digit market share, even governments are forgetting about Firefox. The United States, tax office (IRS), not so recently, experienced issues when loaded with Firefox.
It's the principle?
As we have established, there is no principle. Firefox is no different from Chromium and Mozilla, no better than Google or Microsoft.
Vivaldi web browser is everything Firefox should have been the last decade or more.
Yes, Vivaldi Browser is based off of the open source code, chromium, but it does not follow Google's lead, supporting both v2 and v3 browser extensions (meaning uBlock will still work). Vivaldi, includes their own ad and tracker blocker, is not owned and managed by an ad company, and is the ONLY web browser to be A.I. free (does not include an AI).
The latest version, 6.9, even added support to ensure uBlock will continue to work.
The Sharkey bug, that sometimes causes post to go "poof" if you attempt to "delete and edit", but mistakenly click anywhere outside the overlay --- Yea, that is getting on my nerves.
I have not been able to reproduce that bug in Misskey or CherryPick. It seems to be exclusive to Sharkey. Thank goodness for that fact. I am truly looking forward to our move to Cherry Pick.
Install Linux Mint 22 (Cinnamon) with password requirement to sign in. Using the GUI have Mint update. Reboot. Confirm that you need a password to use sudo (you do).
In the "start menu" (app menu), open "Users and Groups" and create another administrator. Note there is no option to require password sign in, but that is not the greater issue.
Log out, log in as your new user. Open "Users and Groups" again. Delete the 1st user. Reboot.
Guess what, you never need a password, ever again. You can right click and run as root anytime you want, you can run sudo anytime you feel like it. No passwords or prompt warning you of your actions. Install any random DEB file without any prompt.
Step 1) Download a fresh copy of Linux Mint. I obtained my copy from the torrent link off of Mint's website.
Step 2) Install Linux Mint.
I did this in a hurry, so I used "oz" for everything (username, password, name of system). In my opinion, the 2 character password, should not have been allowed.
Step 3) After installing, use their GUI tool to update Mint.
Step 4) Reboot after updating.
Step 5) Using their "Users and groups" app, create a new administrator. You'll not be asked to enter a password or if you want to include one for the new user (I even shared a video in the thread here (see URL / quote ).
Step 6) Log out as 1st admin (for me that was, oz).
Step 7) Log in as 2nd admin (for me that was, oz2).
Step 8) Using the "Users and groups" tool, delete 1st admin.
Someone reported you may need to reboot, but you've got SUDO rights for now on. You can right click, and select open as root, without any prompts. You can open the terminal and run sudo, without any prompts. It's your universe now!
The world is not what any of us would like it to be, unfortunately.
I imagine a world where everyone can freely be themselves, love whoever they love, and peacefully co-exist. I imagine a world where everyone is not struggling, living paycheck to paycheck. A world where healthcare truly is a right for all. A world that people took care not to trash our water and air, and clean energy was the norm.
It is not a perfect world I envision, because asshole are unfortunately a reality. But the world, most certainly can be better than "this", that we have today.
It is my personal and professional opinion, not to fund or further trust the Starkey Development.
I am out 1,000 bucks and that is my own doing. My fault. My stupidity.
But the development may be toxic with some not so nice individuals. The software, I like. You're likely using the software too (It's good, isn't it? I think so). But I do believe there are some toxic people you may not want to be associated within the development.
If they can pick up a server and then bring that server to a local data center, they're not someone's underage child. More so, they would not be collecting the funds to achieve all this if they were.
Officially (publically), no, but I cannot say they have nothing to do with the development.
We were all given that public notice that Sharkey was now under new management. A few people even reached out (publically and in private) to tell me things were changing. The new leadership, however, seems to be up to some of the same games as the old leadership, though. A new beginning this was not.
I am not surprised, just disappointed.
A bit of a long read, but may give some insight (see quote / link).
The Sharkey Development is moving host from their EU location to The United States.
Attached is the raw code obtained from the GitLab from today, September 9, 2024, at 3:10 PM EDT. It records the last code change was from September 8, 2024, 12:33 PM EDT.
This is the raw code (untested) and should not be used in production. I am archiving it unofficially.
