That's fine. I disagree wholeheartedly and that's ok too.
Reply limiting also let's marginalized people post without fear of drive by racism/trolling/etc
It's a way to prevent vent posts from attracting the most obnoxious reply guys or sealions.
Not every post on Masto needs to be a debate. This isn't reddit. A bunch of commenters yelling "that's not true" only drives engagement with a post here and ensures more people see it. -

If i may,
People will take an untrustworthy, abusive platform because it makes them laugh. It's where their friends and their idols and their peers are. It presents content that is relevant to them. Very few people are choosing social media based on ideological principles. The ones that do are all here.
I said this place is uninteresting for a lot of people. You said "Yeah, I know there's not *every* interest here,"
But I'm not talking about every interest. I'm talking about common ones. It still feels like there's a very small sports community here, still a very small religious presence here, very little pop culture discussion here. None of those are niche irl.
What good is "choosing what you see or interact with here" when your effective choices are "stuff you don't like, don't quite care about, or a slow trickle of new posts?"
Like, i would like a masto experience free of any mention of FOSS or Linux or Python or SW development or coding of any kind. I don't care at all about those subjects. But that's not feasible. Not without identifying 25+ different words and tags and a lot of false positives getting caught up in my filters. So instead i block a few key terms and commit to scrolling past someone's excited discovery that they can in fact install fizwidget 5.1.3 onto their linux server or whatever. -

I don't mean to derail this and whatnot but like... Mastodon is uninteresting for a lot of people, low key. Interesting is subjective but I'm personally here mostly out of stubbornness and for moral reasons.. I've got a small cadre of interesting people i talk to here but even with them, I'm uninterested in much of what they retweet or post.
A lot of the things i like, do, see, enjoy, etc have minimal presence here as far as i can tell.
Mastodon attracts, caters to, and maintains, a very specific set of interests and personalities, and they are frequently self righteous about how much better Masto is and how much fun they're having here and how awful Twitter always was.
It's pretty easy to get here, struggle to find interesting (very subjective) people or content early on, and then be told that it's your fault that you're not having a good time. That you're doing Masto wrong, by picking the wrong server or not following/using hashtags, and that the things you want in order to make this place more familiar or accommodating are actually bad and so are you for wanting them.
That was my early exp anyways. I'm just a stubborn MF so i stayed anyways. -

The communities on Masto/Masto adjacent apps already make me feel like a filthy normie 35% of the time.
Lemmy gives me that vibe like 85% of the time. Feels very clear I'm not among my people in any sense of the word -

#Reddit is unstable and its business model is increasingly scummy but #Lemmy/ #Kbin/ #Mbin still show no signs of offering the content or community i care about. My attempts to support a few communities mostly ended up talking to myself or a few others.

I'm a Mechanical Engineer, not a programmer, but the OG post knows how many comments, likes, and retweets it has, right?
Like, you can't comment on a post without the original poster seeing it, right? Can the post keep track of how many various interactions it has, and report those numbers along with the content itself when a server requests the post?
Can the post's server tell the requesting server how many interactions the post has, so you can at least see the total number of replies even if you can't see all of them? -

I understand and agree that they're different software in the same general category.
This feels like a case where people conflate a thing with the biggest most ubiquitous brand in the category, like Xeroxing a document or offering a Kleenex or Googling something on the internet. -

@BeAware It's a bad feeling to be sure. It's also unfair. You're not individually responsible for the AI trend.
I think if companies weren't allowed to use AI art, full stop, that's one thing. But art, especially visual art, is already deeply undervalued.
Visual artists saw how online machine translation services gave medium and larger companies a reason to reduce the number of translation/localization projects they contracted, and they can see themselves similarly threatened.
One person making a set of images with an AI tool is fun.
Book/Music publishers using AI generated cover artwork instead of paying an artist is harder to accept. -
