@sun @eriner A ton of Xitter spam comes from verified accounts. They'll just pay to spam if whatever scam they run can recoup those costs, which it always can unless you make it too expensive for normal people to pay.

@sun @RustyCrab @pi55d I think once you have a good_enuf* standard for encryption then it doesn't really matter anymore. WhatsApp is below the standard I would prefer but it's fine.

If Matrix gets better I'd love to just use it bridged to other stuff though. There are a ton of bridges for it, but you have to self host them and I just don't want to deal with that.

@sun @RustyCrab @pi55d Though Signal is fairly well known and easy to get people to use bc sign up is so easy. I would prefer it gain more ground, but it hasn't yet, so I'm fine with WhatsApp.

@sun @RustyCrab @pi55d Original point being, group centered apps let you have both mass adoption and a niche culture, which is why I appreciate them more than any of these atopical microbloggers nowadays.

WhatsApp is pretty good for this. As long as you don't name your group "Hitler Nation 88" or "Le Epic Child Porn Trading Store" or plan a large crime, you're pretty much fine on WhatsApp.

@RustyCrab @sun @pi55d The conditions under which your encryption will be broken on WhatsApp are pretty clear. If you get reported in a chat, your 5 most recent messages will be sent to a janny in Pakistan who will decide if you're based or cringe.

Don't rely on it as an absolute beacon for personal security obviously, but for most use cases it's fine and worth it to not have to harass every new friend you make to download a new app, which they won't check even if they do.

@RustyCrab @sun @pi55d Yeah bc he didn't do it for 10 years and doesn't want to go to jail, and even then, it has to be taken in the context that his site has thousands of child porn trading groups that don't get taken down because reports go into a black hole.

@RustyCrab @pi55d @sun You can make a better case against WhatsApp. It's basically Signal except the client will copy and report the contents of already decrypted messages to Meta if someone reports them.

Not the worst thing ever but not great. Good for talking to normal people though, most people have it.

The Telegram CEO is about to be imprisoned for years bc his company straight up ignored government reports of massive organized crime but sure it's a honeypot I guess 😂

@RustyCrab @sun @pi55d It's useful to have everyone in one place so you can use the app you want to talk to people but my favorite apps are Telegram and WhatsApp now bc you can talk to lots of people and also have niche communities.
