And yet. The last month, that has completely changed. The Greenland thing baffled the country and worried the government. But it’s really the about face on Ukraine that is angering people. They thought that because they had the US’s back, it was be reciprocated. They thought they shared values. The sentiment of betrayal is growing.
It’s a small country. It doesn’t weigh much. But when you lose an ally like this, you should be very, very worried. Because there’s probably no one left who truly cares for you. Only sycophants looking for qui pro quos.
Fashion articles in newspapers will have a headline like "the new trend everyone is jumping on to this season! Don't miss it!" and the trend will be "beige".
Next month is #FreezerFebruary: when you eat (or compost, if best-before date is too far in the past) everything left in your freezer, no matter what. On March 1st, you turn it off and defrost it, and start spring with a clean freezer. Frost in the freezer takes up space and wastes energy. This is good for you AND for the planet. Who is with me?
@aral “the call frightened Danish authorities and moved both parties farther from a deal.” What weird framing. This is Trump-speak. There is no “deal” to be had. There is nothing on the table that Trump is entitled to. He’s not entitled to Greenland, not a bit of it. Greenland belongs to itself. Making a “deal” about Greenland is a non-starter.
If you want to know how #feminism is going in #France, this week a woman had to go all the way to the European Court of Human Rights to have it affirmed that not having sex with her husband wasn’t a fault. A French Court had declared that marriage created an obligation to deliver sex.
#accessibility question: when I share a hashtag with multiple words in it, do screen readers know that different words are marked by capitalization? Or is it a jumble of letters?
@louis@mekkaokereke This is how I feel about climate disasters. I used to think “when the shit really hits the fan, it will be too late, but they will have to admit climate change is real.” And here we are, LA went up in flames, and they are saying the problem is woke firefighters. They are choosing not to believe their own eyes and ears. It is, however, very relevant to note down *who* is telling you not to believe your eyes and ears. Many are centrists who should be discredited forever.
What is the name of this stitch/ cable pattern? This is on a handmade garment I bought online for baby, and I just adore it. It’s honeycomb shaped, except honeycomb stitch is something else… I would love to try to make something like this! #knitting@knitting
I have been listing the things that keep me tied to #Facebook and a main one is the strength of the local Facebook groups, even for a small rural community. Are there examples of successful small-town networks existing outside Facebook? And in particular, successful “migrations” from meta-owned platforms to something more independent? #socialmedia
I’m thiiiiiis close to dusting off the basic html skills I haven’t used for 12 years to make a super simple page linking to my favourite sewing and knitting pattern resources. Googling for patterns returns AI crap and Shein e-commerce all the time.
There is one account whose messages I always stop and read on this website: @auschwitzmuseum They are doing precious work to keep alive the memory of people murdered in Auschwitz. They have been stuck at almost 100,000 followers for months. If you don’t already follow them, do so now. Keep their memory alive.
We know that “never again” is a failure. But as long as genocides keep happening in this world, we can demonstrate that we will never let such a crime go missing in our memories. Never forget.
