Zyklon B was a pesticide produced by the Degesch company. It was initially designated for eradicating insects, such as lice.
From late 1941, Zyklon B was also used at Auschwitz to murder people in gas chambers, overwhelmingly Jews who were deported within the extermination program planned by Nazi Germany, but also small groups of prisoners: Polish, Soviet POWs, or Roma and Sinti.

She was deported to Auschwitz from Theresienstadt on 6 September 1943. She did not survive.
16 November 1940 | The Germans closed and isolated the Warsaw Ghetto from the rest of the city. It became the largest ghetto in occupied Europe. Over 450,000 Jews were crowded in the area of 307 hectares.

Most Jews deported by the German Nazis to Auschwitz for extermination were promised resettlement & new life. They packed their suitcases with all the essential items. Hope was used as a weapon.
The suitcases we preserve and display at the Memorial are important documents as they carry the names of their owners.

11 November 1928 | A Dutch Jewish girl, Betje Philips, was born in Amsterdam.
In February 1943 she was deported to Auschwitz and most probably murdered in a gas chamber after the selection.
9-10 November 1938 | November Pogrom organized against the Jews throughout Nazi Germany. Hundreds were killed & died by suicide, 30,000 men were arrested, over 1,000 synagogues were burnt, and over 7,000 Jewish businesses were destroyed or damaged.

21 October 1938 | A Dutch Jewish girl, Roza Elisabeth, van Coevorden was born in Rotterdam.
In August 1942 she was deported to Auschwitz together with her mother Mathilda. They were both murdered in a gas chamber after the selection.
20 October 1943 | Helena Płotnicka was registered as a prisoner of Auschwitz no. 65492. She was a contact between the camp resistance and the outside world and participated in action of illegal transfer of food to the camp. She was arrested on May 19, 1943. On October 20 she was transferred to the female camp in Birkenau where she perished on March 17, 1944.
"Interrupted lesson" is a documentary telling the story of some of ca. 1,500 Poles who lived outside the 15 square miles security perimeter of Auschwitz. They risked their lives to help prisoners of the camp.

15 September 1931. | A Dutch Jewish boy, Joseph Karel Vos, was born in Kempen.
He arrived at Auschwitz on 26 November 1942 in a transport of 709 Jews deported from #Westerbork. He was among 667 of them murdered in gas chambers after the selection.
15 September 1929 | Polish Jewish woman Halina Birenbaum was born in Warsaw.
She survived the Warsaw ghetto, Majdanek, Auschwitz (no. 48693), Ravensbrück & Neustadt-Glewe camps. In 1947, she emigrated to Israel.
