@skinnylatte That’s a thing that a lot of Europeans don’t get, and as a result wonder why “we Americans” aren’t shutting the government down with protests. In France or Germany, traveling 300 miles crosses a large fraction of the whole country… in California, never mind the whole US, that doesn’t quite get you from San Francisco to Los Angeles.

@dansup @reiver Is it? It may be a gateway to actually developing small to medium apps, but I think it’s becoming increasingly clear that it removes the learning aspect (not just of programming, but writing and graphic design etc too).

@skinnylatte If I might make a modest suggestion, get a small (0.5 to 2 kwh) battery, such as from Bluetti or Jackery. That'll cost you from 200 to 800 bucks, depending on capacity. The lower end of that range will keep an LED light + phone running for quite some time, while the upper end will do that + keep your fridge cold for a while. With an additional modest solar panel (ok, not in bay area right now <sob>), you could keep going for quite a while.

@johncarlosbaez We were apex predators even 50000 years ago… I’ve read that either the Masai or the Zulu, don’t remember which now, will walk into a lion pride’s resting ground, a group of 5-6 young men armed only with spears, and take the lions’ antelope kill away: a test of bravery. And the lions get the F out of the way, too. Because humans are very scary apex predators.

@mcnado my closest encounter with homeless people was one evening when I was walking home from work. Two guys came up to me and said “hey, you should look out, the police are doing a sweep and taking everyone’s stuff” (I look scruffy at the best of times). I thanked them, told them I would certainly be careful and pay attention, and wished them the best of luck. They were just brothers looking out for a brother…
