Just so we’re all clear, most homeless people in the US are not violent offenders. Many suffer from mental illness (because we have utterly failed to address these conditions as a society), but most are not violent at all. Drug and alcohol addiction is not rare, but also not universal.
I have worked with the homeless for almost 20 years now. Characterizing homeless people as violent drug addicts is a quick way to reveal ignorance and inhumanity in a person.

@mcnado you’re so much more empathetic then the doc’s at my local ER. I made a mistake of carrying a backpack to my last ER visit (cuz I thought I’d be admitted for treatment), but realized quickly they assumed I was homeless and drug seeking, as they pushed me out the door.

@mcnado my closest encounter with homeless people was one evening when I was walking home from work. Two guys came up to me and said “hey, you should look out, the police are doing a sweep and taking everyone’s stuff” (I look scruffy at the best of times). I thanked them, told them I would certainly be careful and pay attention, and wished them the best of luck. They were just brothers looking out for a brother…

@mcnado The lie that #homeless people are drug addicts and criminals has to be stopped. In any give group in society, you can find drug addicts and criminals. Some are in Congress. Some work in healthcare. Some work in schools.
#Homeless people are not lazy.
Homeless people are not bad.
Society failed them and they deserve to be lifted up out of the hole, not shoved back down by their face. It's wrong.
