Power outage in most of San Francisco, including traffic lights. Autonomous cars going nuts. I shall stay home (in the dark) in case I get run over by a Waymo.
I paid $200 for electricity and gas yesterday. We don’t use the dryer or heater. I never thought I could hate a power company, mainly because I’ve never had to think about power companies, but I hate PG&E.
@pmonks I really enjoy how bad their ads are. They have series of interviews between their CEO or C suite and actual customers. They edited the interviews to show that they are apologizing and improving. But everybody is still so mad at them
@CaraBruar that’s the last month. So not quite winter. It also doesn’t get super cold. We have 750 sq ft, but again we don’t use any heating or cooling devices (heaters or AC)
@skinnylatte what period does that cover? Ours in winter is $1100 aud for 4 months, that's about usd 500. Not that I disagree with you at all, they are all parasitic ghouls.
It seems like this started from a substation fire down the street.. they’re still dealing with it.
Waymo has suspended service but that just means they’ve bricked all their cars, which are just sitting at intersections and people have to drive around them in the rain.
They recently started service to the peninsula so I guess there must be some on the freeways too.
Trains aren’t running underground. It’s a good thing l this didn’t happen during week day commute hours.
My power company has sent me three messages about when they’ll restore service and they’ve missed the first two targets they promised.
@skinnylatte Their customers (hostages?) are so vocally unhappy with them, that they the only power company I know anything about in a place I‘ve never lived. That said, I wish we only paid $200/month for energy - our bill is well over twice that. Our house is somewhat larger, and we get rather more drastic temperature swings. I suppose our utilities do just work, for the most part, so I can’t complain too much.
@skinnylatte I've gotten more than a dozen texts, they seem to be just making sh*t up. We're about to miss the most recent 8:15 prediction. And we're down to our last 18Ah of backup batteries, might be going to bed early tonight.
@skinnylatte Waymos aren't fully autonomous. They have remote human supervisors, who I suspect can't control them in outages. You're seeing what it would look like if they were really autonomous.
Honestly, the longest power outage we’ve experienced since we got here.
In terms of number of outages and frequency, SF is not as bad as Monterey (we had that regularly there). But I think the combination of ‘our driverless car companies have no plan for what happens when this sort of thing happens’ and ‘poor and unaccountable from PG&E in a very dense area’ means it feels like things can escalate when the infra is down.
Just like how we have no AC and can’t handle the 1-3 days a year where it’s super hot, we also aren’t really prepared for power outages. I do have ‘better emergency preparedness’ on my list to do, soon, also because the tremors from the last few earthquake have spooked me a bit.
@skinnylatte If I might make a modest suggestion, get a small (0.5 to 2 kwh) battery, such as from Bluetti or Jackery. That'll cost you from 200 to 800 bucks, depending on capacity. The lower end of that range will keep an LED light + phone running for quite some time, while the upper end will do that + keep your fridge cold for a while. With an additional modest solar panel (ok, not in bay area right now <sob>), you could keep going for quite a while.
@Affekt oh yeah! I should really do more. This definitely showed me I have to.
I am in an apartment with a gas stove which I felt okay about since I could make stuff and food yesterday. However in the case of an earthquake I might be scared.
