a little bit of truth a lot of conjecture and outright lies, and they hit a homer into your heads.

@p All hope of credibility. Any shred whatsoever.
(PSST: The NYTimes published a quite a lot of wikileaks until people started figuring out Assange has an agenda.)

@p snort
You've destroyed any hope of credibility you could have hoped to have with that last sentence.
Do you even know that?

@p It's not partisan. It's an old saying tho, D's fall in love, R's fall in line.
Trump bashed FEMA and the recovery, and the Rs followed suit.
As for the "extreme exaggeration" -- hardly.
Chaos and confusion sewn while a local emergency is going on, specifically designed to undermine trust in local authorities who are providing safety tips and guidance, is trying to kill the people who need safety tips and guidance.
The reason he wasn't successful in sowing chaos and confusion about instructions the authorities were giving is that LA is the largest media market in the world, we have 7 local tv news stations, and not only did all of them provide 24 hour coverage and information, other media outlets came to LA and provided their services to those 7 stations.

@p Same people who claim FEMA wasn't there, but it was really neato that other states were sending crews?
Or the ones who spread rumors that Biden was trying to steal their house?
Not sure I'd trust bots on fedi.
What I know, Elon tried to kill my neighbors by spreading malicious rumors.

The U.S. Forest Service fired thousands of workers in the past week, including firefighters, biologists, and disaster recovery experts. Many were directly involved in western North Carolina recovery efforts after Helene.

@astarsscreams @KeepTakingTheSoma @GluedToTheScreen Pretty much how I heard about it.
2nd report disclosed the suspect killed her first husband, and they had a short interview with the victim's first wife. A fairly detailed report for a murder, but I'd expect that for a firefighter rn. Lots of interest because rn they're major heroes.

@sun @feld @thendrix And the claim they don't have id comes from what part of your ass?
The ID issue is a 2 parter -- voting and real ID requiring a birth certificate. Not a SS issue, but I know how you like to fuss things up.
They don't need a bank account, so that part of your ass that was pulled from is where you'll find "Social Security recipients don't have ID!!"
They needed id to cash the checks back in the paper checks days anyway.
PS: I figured out the deep secret of everyone on this thread. None of you has a clue how life works outside of pressing send on the internets.

@sun @feld @thendrix Incidentally, that's not how it works.
There is a contract awarded to a large bank in Texas to issue debit cards for SS recipients who don't have bank accounts.

@sun @Leyonhjelm @polarisera Really? How AMAZING!!!
I was working with tech before Bill Gates dropped out of Harvard. In fact, before he went to Harvard.
What's provably wrong is that a large number of 150 year olds are receiving checks and no one noticed.
Unless of course you have the real Trump Derangement Syndrome, and you believe anything the man says.

As he moved to cut foreign aid, he and Elon Musk alleged widespread waste and abuse, although they offered little evidence to back up their claims and may simply disagree with how the money was being spent.
With that in mind, consider what the Trump administration is now doing to Social Security, seeding the idea, which is not backed up by known facts, that millions of dead people are collecting payments.

@Leyonhjelm @polarisera "The challenge with COBOL is that it doesn’t have a standardized way to store and work with dates — unlike most modern programming languages. Instead, many dates in COBOL must be coded to a reference number, often using an international standard, Rege explained.
"The most common reference date number is May 20, 1875, under an international standard known as ISO 8601. That means if someone applies for Social Security without a birth date, they may be recorded as 150 years old in the database depending on how a programmer troubleshoots the issue.
"Programmers can overcome these limitations in COBOL’s functionality, but they may also opt to use 1875 as a placeholder for unknown dates if it aligns with the database’s purpose… For example, when the federal government began issuing regular monthly Social Security payments in January 1940, recipients needed to be at least 65 to qualify, meaning they needed to be born in 1875 or before.
"Those who crafted the Social Security database may have, therefore, set 1875 as the default birth year for anyone who lacked that information at the time."
