@HeavenlyPossum I think honestly a lot of the world could see an increase in quality of life and still manage to see overall degrowth if we reined in the worst excesses of businesses and rich people
@AnarchoNinaWrites it also kind of feels in general like everyone is in a big rush to embrace fascism as the new normal and declare the right the winners of the culture war because Trump got like 1 out of 5 people to vote for him with a 51% disapproval rating
kind of useful cultural thing to know about Japan because it comes up in anime a lot and may be confusing (just came up in an anime I'm watching now)
In Japan up until maybe within the last year or so the concept of joint custody of children after a divorce was non-existent
traditionally fathers are expected to stay out of the lives of their children after divorce and kids will usually have their surnames changed
so in anime a lot you'll have big reveals of it turning out that someone that has been being treated as a stranger up until then is actually a character's father or similar things
you'll also often have characters that seemingly just don't have a father at all
@farah@AnarchoNinaWrites honest truth I think the real deciding factor was well over a decade of extremely bad choices by the democrats that brought us to this moment
where the fuck did this narrative that Kamala Harris ran a great campaign come from?
the centerpiece of her campaign was a brutal immigration policy and how she had no intention of doing anything different than Biden
she spent most of her campaign talking about her gun and how much Dick Cheney likes her to try to flip a bunch of suburban white women who ended up just voting for Trump anyway while telling her base that they could expect nothing from her but not being Trump while most people can't afford groceries let alone rent
this wasn't people witholding their vote out of protest this was people withholding their vote because she never gave them enough reason to jump through the various hoops that voting entails
don't even get me started on how she showed no intention to stop sending arms to Israel even though multiple polls showed this would be a net gain for her in votes
it was a really dogshit campaign and the sooner we can wrap our heads around it the sooner we can make sure the dipshits who planned this campaign are never allowed to make an important decision ever again
@OrionKidder@_L1vY_ white women are an extremely unreliable voting bloc because being white is always more important to them than being women and the Democrats should have learned that lesson by now
@AnarchoNinaWrites the GOP's completely unearned reputation as being good for the economy strikes again
I've been thinking about it and I feel like a lot of this is people misinterpret the performative cruelty of the GOP as like pragmatism and a willingness to make painful but necessary choices rather than the pandering to bigots and religious nuts that it really is
