It is absolutely wild to me that at the same time the Online Safety Act is coming in to supposedly "save the children" and basically causing every UK-linked independent community to shut down that we simultaneously have meta at the other end of the scale saying it's perfectly fine, complete with specific examples, to call LGBTQ people "mentally ill" or use slurs against them.

Both of these are at such extremes of the spectrum that the centre ground is no longer in the same universe as either.

@GossiTheDog does 40k servers pass the sniff test or do they mean 40k devices?

Because unless their servers should have had LOM, surely, and they only have ~100k staff total, many of whom would use shared endpoints (or not use one at all), so I can believe 40k endpoints.

Even the most egregious example of unintegrated acquisitions I know of was only at around 10k servers (estimated!) for 50k employees, and Delta doesn’t really have a similar acqui-problem, do they?

@hacks4pancakes my solution to this historically has been a charger that has a standard iec spec inlet rather than a wallwart and then just buy a mains cable (in country if necessary), or borrow the cable out of the tv/radio/whatever.

Also more likely to fit in awkwardly placed sockets that are too close to something else, & less likely to fall out of worn hotel outlets as there’s no heavy “brick”. Does require a bit more bag space, but you only ever need the cheap bit then.

@leftpaddotpy @q I have concerns that close reading of the signal blog about this and KB articles about this is that signal messages will still be sent by the network with the sender's phone number, because from their description it is the receiver's client choosing not to display it, and that seems problematic given the existence of 3rd party clients and if this is true it is not safe and should not be relied upon to not send your number to everyone still and am I the only person who sees this?

@thomasfuchs the thing about the successes of spacex and tesla is that it basically relies on the goodwill and ingenuity of the people working there who believe in “the cause”. It never made him some 4d-chess playing genius any more than it would have any other guy with an attitude problem and a pile of money.

@GossiTheDog FYI seems Fortigate still isn't (as of a couple of hours ago) offering 7.4.3 to people going into their fortinet device and checking for updates as they usually might, and so people might think they are up to date when they are not.... you have to pull the image from fortinet's site and upload it manually to upgrade atm :\

“what exists today and how what exists today is experienced by accounts with large followings” (at least, large accounts not about fedi itself),

which is the subject of the critical thoughts/observations being made

is probably a pretty good example of the sorts of comments / sentiments that don’t add value to a conversation, but aren’t abusive and don’t deserve to get equal priority ranking with those from people who actually follow & want to engage with someone.

@feditips @TechConnectify the point is that there is a world of difference between *abuse* and merely receiving relentless, unimaginative, self-centred, no value gripes about the existence of an account or the things it does that are NOT personal abuse and will not breach most instance rules but nevertheless crowd out meaningful interactions. Twitter has/had a quality filter specifically for preventing those replies turning into notifications.

@feditips @TechConnectify IMO the issue with this is that

* merely being.. "boringly unpleasant" and adding 0 value (e.g. "youtubers out of our fedi, boo") is not going to be a conduct breach on the majority of instances, and

* block/report functions do not scale to the noise created by having thousands of followers boosting you into the feeds of people who didn't want to see it that are apparently incapable of ignoring it - even if they WERE conduct breaches.
