    Ok, here's an experiment.

I just had a person come to mind from my past, that I am wondering if the Fediverse might help me find: a general web search so far has not come up with anything.

I've been doing decolonisation work, and one aspect of indigenous culture which I've been pondering is oral storytelling. That cultural method of passing information survived for so long before the written word was invented and became dominant (and here you are, reading this, thanks to this technology).

When I was a travelling in the 90s, I met a storyteller going by the name of Dorje busking in Edinburgh. He had previously been a lawyer in Lancashire, had created a room in his home that was a "padded cell", and at some point decided that whole career was bullshit and he gave up everything and became a travelling storyteller. He played a small lap harp, which he had a case for and which I decorated for him. He had a partner called Abby at the time, they had a dog.

I'm wondering if this sounds familiar to anyone here in the Fediverse? Tagging below for relevance, boosts appreciated if you are an older Fediversian and are UK based.

@steter @DoomsdaysCW heh. I had to do a double take initially, I was like "oh yeah! Wait. What was the name of the robot in hitchikers, exactly?" 😂

@bugwhisperer great work! I'm doing things the opposite way around, got all my websites and domains out of the US and now working on #deGoogling.

Was never in the #Facebook ecosystem, could see how poisoned it was from the beginning, as @pluralistic put it in his book "The Internet Con":

"Finally, there’s Facebook, up there in the top right corner: maximum surveillance, maximum control. It’s a company that combines Google's insatiable appetite for your private data with Apple’s iron-fisted control over how you use its service. The worst of all possible worlds."

Also: AWS? I hope that's only a stepping stone, they are just as shitty as the others.

@meganL I've been deleted by many people and groups of friends because I refused to join FB. I've lost many business opportunities, and many many more social opportunities.

The cost was and remains large, but I still have no regrets, I just wish more would take a stand.

And with that I've completed #20books20days - it's been really fun to think over my life and the books that have been impactful. There are a few books from authors that have turned out to be deeply problematic that I haven't included, which is sad, but I think appropriate, even though some say you can separate the art from the artist....

@jill @dansup I suspect this is because Mastodon doesn't use authorised fetch by default, and only using it with some instances means you allow people to continue to communicate with the instances that don't have it turned on (if I understand correctly, this is a lot of Mastodon). It would be infinitely better if all Mastodon used authorise fetch by default, it is more secure, and many other Fediverse projects do.

@mike @Mmccue I think this is fairly normal behaviour for Fedi enthusiasts. Kinda like Pokemon.

@Roboron @mike @controlfreak I was hoping someone would point this out. As an instance's number of users grows it does bring in more content from other instances, but it's not *all* the content from each instance.

However, if you have users who become viral on a bigger instance, that could be a really big problem, if I understand correctly, that can already be an issue for small instances with celebrities.

@petrescatraian @noam oops, didn't notice that, but from your reply it looks like the process of filtering must be an ActivityPub feature, I think I've seen it on all Fedi apps so far...
