This has very important repercussions in what gets published.
Because in japan the actual comic production is offloaded to third parties, a market is created, where each author enters in competition with the others to get some of the limited panels and reader attention available.
On top of that, there's risk management. When someone makes new stuff, there is always at least some risk that the market won't like it, resulting in either a loss in the investiment, or making less money than investing in something else would have. With the japanese model of production, large parts of the risk is offloaded to the single mangakas, while the market competition ensures a continuos stream of new titles.

The market created by the publishers has expanded, and has created the japanese indie scene. But with how centralized production is in america, no such market has been created.

Most people live in cities. The straight majority of the human populatiin does.

Weird since they are almost guaranteed to be the most detached from nature. It's almost as if most of the warming happens in and around them and not in the areas where natural landscapes are allowed to exist unadultered.

That's sophistry. Not only cities are more sensibke to temoerature rises (asphalt), but the warming doesn't just "in the areas where natural landscapes are allowed to exist unadultered", it's planet wide and affects all the ecosystems, increasing desertification and destroying crops, which can easily affect cities.
