one of the greatest san francisco mysteries is the burger king on van ness. how is it still operating—physically, financially? the building is half closed and only has half its windows no matter what they do to repair it. I need a coyote media piece on it
official guidance from the state is to have mailed your vote by mail ballot by wednesday last week due to recent changes in postmark policy for elections snd slowdowns at usps.
if you haven’t mailed your ballot yet: - go to post office and have them postmark it in front of you - drop it off in an official ballot drop box - turn in your ballot tomorrow at polling location and vote in person instead
yesterday we sat on the tarmac while waiting for a gate for a bit, angled so I could see all of the planes coming in on one of SFO's four runways. it was wild how efficient it is, like a plane landing on the same runway every few minutes
finally found actual writeup about why flights from sfo have been consistently delayed or canceled the last month or two, rather than just some vague rumors
@eniatitova video pissed me off enough that I finally emailed supe chan to let her know I'm not voting for her if she signs on to the proposition. had been meaning to but assumed there was no point, until I heard that deadline is tomorrow and wong still doesn't have the signatures
@anildash it's timely. I was just talking about this yesterday at lunch with some old coworkers, all of whom are intending to leave the industry (some faster than others). I'm not sure I'm as optimistic as you are about the possibility of change (focusing mainly on the "this too shall pass"), but I appreciate the acknowledgement of how many are feeling (felt it physically) and some concrete advice about how to move through it
@skinnylatte the food situation here definitely highlights all of the structural problems with the city for me, particularly the creeping dullness caused by high cost of living. I do still love it, but also when I go to LA I just ecstatically binge eat my entire trip
@skinnylatte I'm excited to try out that uzbek restaurant though! I'm grateful to live walking distance from some of the few restaurants in the city I'm actually excited about (hokkaido included - they do discount sushi every day for what's left starting at 5:30, I think?)
@skinnylatte don't forget fighting a rapid transit lane for one of the busiest routes on the city, in order to preserve "historically significant" angled parking spots
for folks in the #sfba there are two really great exhibits at the YBCA right now. $10 gets you in to both:
Bay Area Then, an exhibit of radical art, publications, and artist spaces in SF in the 90s, including lots of zines, some beautiful portraits and footage of bike messengers cruising the city, a huge Margaret Kilgallen piece. https://www.kqed.org/arts/13979705
@anna it really depends and is more complicated than I fully understand. as tim says, US government employees are generally unionized. many of my friends are in non-unionized term-limited positions that have basically no protections, though - this is a way many of the "tech to public sector" pipelines have happened recently, as a hack to more closely match private sector salaries more onerous hiring processes. also, many folks working for government are contractors.
@anna looks like you've - already got a lot of great advice. I'l just reiterate about selecting - talk to people you know who have tattoos in style you like. look at tattooer instagram (unfortunately they're all there) - see what other tattooers artists you like follow. visit shops if you can, see if people whose style you like will do consult so that you can see if you like their personality and feel comfortable giving them feedback.
for where - try taping a drawing to yourself! leave it on
