2025 feels like the year I’ll get a tattoo (something I’ve been wanting to do since my teens).

Do people have advice on how to figure out the logistics of a tattoo (vetting a tattoo artist, choosing a placement, aftercare)?

@anna looks like you've - already got a lot of great advice. I'l just reiterate about selecting - talk to people you know who have tattoos in style you like. look at tattooer instagram (unfortunately they're all there) - see what other tattooers artists you like follow. visit shops if you can, see if people whose style you like will do consult so that you can see if you like their personality and feel comfortable giving them feedback.
for where - try taping a drawing to yourself! leave it on

@anna meet them and see if you like their style. I suggest letting them design it based on your input. If you bring them something and say "tattoo this on me" it's probably not going to look very good. There are very specific rules and techniques for tattoo art that ensure it looks good and lasts. Specifically they want to ensure there are good solid lines and incorporate some negative space (not tattooed skin) so it ages well.
Also trust them on placement and orientation. There are standard guidelines like making sure the tattoo is positioned inward (toward your body) if the object of the art can be faced in a direction.
Also, size matters a lot. You'll never get a good looking tattoo if it's too small for the details you want to incorporate.
In the end, you have to be able to trust them. They should know what they're doing. -

Since a lot of you talked about tattoo artist recommendations—does anyone know any in Berlin or São Paulo who does beautiful monochrome botanic art? What I’m envisioning is a big one on my inner right forearm with several of my favorite plants.
