@PonyPanda @Eris @colonelj @josh @glacierglider1 @graf @mint What compelled me to write my response in the first place is seeing people I know who have nothing to do with the situation and no reason to care having a hearty laugh at graf for writing about what happened with his mother. The contempt is spreading. The only locus of control, as far as I can tell, is with Graf himself. Unless we want to appeal to federal authorities or something else. This is schoolyard time, this is african savannah time. You well know THEY can't be reasoned with.
My hope for posting this, besides something to do with *logos*, is that people understand WHY this shit is happening, and that maybe as a result it can happen less.
I have sympathy for Graf, I really do, I got bullied in middle school and that's exactly what this shitshow reminds me of. Pure compassion won't solve the problem long term. It just seems to rob you of any sense or control. "Why is this happening to ME?"
I don't know. Take or reject. I'm not concern trolling here, I'm just trying to help shit make more sense.

@PonyPanda @Eris @colonelj @josh @glacierglider1 @graf @mint Well first off I wouldn't let any of my personal data get linked to me when I'm runni mg a controversial website. Barring that, I wouldn't complain in public. I'd contact the authorities (if the threat is credible) and stay mum on the topic.
Graf is making himself an entertaining target by talking about how much all this bothers him, he's getting people who aren't involved and wouldn't normally give a fuck laughing at him. The thing with someone showing up at his mom's house with a knife-- he'a plying it for sympathy and, except for with people who already know him and are his friends, badly miscalculating. He just looks histrionic. If somebody knows nothing else about you, if you show them this kind of weakness they'll just have contempt for you.
I'm not saying it justifiable or right in any way, or that he deserves any of this. I'm just saying this is how people are. Having an intuitive sense for that could save him a lot of grief.

@PonyPanda @Eris @colonelj @josh @glacierglider1 @graf @mint Sorry to say this, I don't dislike Graf, but he's handling that situation in all the wrong ways. Internet crazies are always going to exist, but him letting them know he's irritated, distressed and/or inconvenienced by any of this is just chumming the water.

@PonyPanda @PhenomX6 @JSDorn @Tactical despite being an anime, the long stretches of dialogue in ghost in the shell SAC are an example of what you're talking about-- something that could work fine in pure text. It also doesn't go overboard with "cyberspace", the main human characters often choosing not to use an avatar beyond just a generic symbol of their presence because avatars are for fags.

@PonyPanda @PhenomX6 @JSDorn @Tactical This isn't unique to literature. comics in the west have been a completely sterile and stagnant medium since lthe 50s, while the east has turned them into an artform surpassing the best we ever made.
There's a lot of reasons for this, but the biggest issue is that our culture has this bizarre expectation of what these media are: books are sophisticated, intelligent, boring. Comics are for manchildren who obsess about continuity over storytelling.
Comics have been synonymous with capeshit since forever, because that was easy to make conform to censorship codes, while the only unique literary genres in the last few decades have been YA and "romance" novels. That's because It's become a hollow shell they use to smuggle smut to women and mindless shonen bullshit to tweens while people think it's actually educational and/or cultured because people are READING.
I think the truth is we are just a "cinematic" culture. If there are great new storytelling techniques to be discovered, it makes sense that it would emerge where the audience is, where there's a demand for new experiences rather than an expectation to conform to a standard. It doesn't matter whether the medium is perfectly suited to it, that's just where the cultural, creative dynamism is.

@Moon @essie @vriska I kind of doubt this somehow-- my neighborhood is full of songbirds, like crazy full, far more than even when I lived in a literal forest, and there are also tons and tons of strays

@vriska @essie @Moon it's the same shit everyone always does when they want to impress you with numbers... 2.4 billion out of what? How many birds are there in the area in question? They just throw this shit out without context and expect you to get outraged.

@vriska @essie @Moon Birds are subject to predation from all manner of species, yet we still see them everywhere. Ecologists hate people and they hate things that people like. It's a guilt trip tactic meant to try and force us to conform to their imperious demands-- same as the shit with climate change.

@vriska @essie @Moon most shit people believe about everything is a lie.
Bird populations correspond far more with the availability of food, either from feeders or garbage, even overriding the presence of cats.
