Bumblebee on purple coneflower.

I've been using a Nikon 105mm macro lens for three years now. It still amazes me the level of detail you can achieve with this lens.

Now, bumblebees are like the school buses of bugs so they present a big target.

Those look like the Dianthus genus too & my ID suggests the same. There are so many species & greenhouse cultivares & many are so similar that I usually don't try to ID species. Here's just a few👇 I've come across or have in my garden. The "theme" is based on 5 petals with serrated edges, spots, or rings of some kind. They are (usually) a version of red, white, pink, or combos thereof. The peach-pink is the most non-red Dianthus I've seen but it is likely a greenhouse cultivar.

Thank you! The ones I posted weren't in my garden but I try to visit that garden (down the street) about this time of the year to see if I can catch them.

My first Eastern prickly pear bloom of the yr! 😀

Planted pads in spring last yr & actually had a bloom last June. They overwintered very well & currently I've 8 bloom/buds. Not sure how the species varies but last yr's flower had an orange center surrounding the stamens & pistil. I've another plant w/ a partially open bud. Looks like it's going to be yellow w/orange so I even have some color variation 👍.

Been hearing them the past two years but not had a chance to photograph. Very cute birds and I ran across it while it was singing its heart out so I got to watch its behavior for a while. Awesome first encounter 🙂

Tried growing some moon flowers in hanging baskets on the back porch last yr but it didn't work out. This yr trying some morning glories instead. Getting some blooms on the regular glories but hardly any foliage. I planted some fancier ones too. They've more foliage but no flowers yet. However, the fancier ones are supposed to bloom later. Hoping the regular ones will put on more leaves.

As I'm sure you recall (🙄), I "managed" to delete a large # of edits from this yr. The upside is that I get another crack at a lot of photos, especially some of my favorites. I took this photo back in February & it's most definitely a favorite. I've not been this close to a Northern flicker before & definitely not seen one drinking from the Iowa River.

Great capture! Molting juvie?

It was 93°F at 6:45 yesterday morning when I went to check on the garden. It was so hot that even this golden-green grasshopper felt the need for a short, upside-down siesta between snacking on my Cosmos.
