Purple coneflowers have long purple petals that radiate from a central disk or cone filled with green, orange, and red florets. This species of bumblebee (likely the brown-belted species) has a black abdomen covered in fine, black hairs, a "belt" of brownish hairs where the abdomen meets the thorax, a thorax covered in fine, yellow hairs, a black head covered in brown-black hairs, two large compound eyes and three, small simple eyes, two short antennae, large mandibles and pointed proboscis, and six legs with long hairs on the hind legs used to store gathered pollen.
