@ConnyDuck Indeed. I don't see much use for a mute shorter than a day. Personally, I don't even see a reason for anything shorter than a week. If someone is having a bad moment, or spamming something during a conference or news event, they are not likely to be done within a day?

So yeah, erring on the side of caution, a day or a week seems like a reasonable minimum.

There's currently eight options for duration in total and that seems like a _lot_. Maybe 3-5 total?

@fosdem #FOSDEM debugging... Part of K lost power. We traced it to one circuit breaker, and kept putting it back in while dividing and conquering towards finding the fault.

As @SwiftOnSecurity keeps saying, there's an advantage in being tall. Instead of going up and down the ladder all the time, I simply grabbed a broom and kept pushing the lever up again and again and again until we found it. A power strip had developed a short...

@fosdem and finally, #FOSDEM staff dinner. I've been looking forward to this weekend for weeks, and I am sooooo happy it's finally over.

People will unload the vans tomorrow, sort and count and account and repair and such over the next week or so. We'll do a mix of in-person and remote post mortem in two weeks. And then we don't want to think about FOSDEM until August...

If you can commit to coming to FOSDEM with a decent full frame digital camera, a tripod, and maybe some flash(es) we would hugely appreciate it.

@signalapp desktop is doing one of my favorite things:

They give me a precisely correct and detailed error description with the workaround on startup: kwallet5 and kwallet6 incompatibility, and that I need to start in kwallet5 mode. And then it just quits.

Even more favorite would be if they... just did the thing they identified correctly, or just migrated the data instead of erroring out on startup...

Is there a #privacy respecting self-hosted #RSS reader server/daemon which has clients for #Linux and #Android, or hosts a website, and synchronizes read and bookmark state between devices?

Bonus points if it runs in a mode discarding all #cookie and/or doesn't load images etc unless I click a button to further reduce #tracking

Are #MDisc worth it? If yes, what drive, disk manufacturer etc do I want? Are 100GB discs are reliable as 50 and 25 ones?
#HDD have shorter life? #LTO #tape seems less portable?

It's been at least five years since I last had a non-hardware-failure failure to boot in #Debian. It might be closer to a decade.

I have also not used #grml for a year or three.

But today I needed to and @grmlproject is simply one of the best sets of software ever assembled.

Any time I have a major issue, it just sits there in my desk drawer, waiting to help. It's awesome.

I should probably upgrade the age-old version I have on this stick though :p

Calling it #GNU / #Linux makes about as much sense as calling yourself teeth/human. Yes it's kinda the default to have but it's not mandatory or uniquely coupled either way and it's most certainly not the defining property.

It's Linux. That's it.

It's amusing how I immediately got the expected replies of people who seem to assume I'm not deeply familiar with the space and still disagree with their interpretation of reality.

#FOSDEM service toot:

ULB usually allows us onto their premises on the last weekend before the semester. While we officially never plan another FOSDEM until next edition's kickoff (late August this year), it's reasonable to expect FOSDEM to happen on 2025-02-01 and 2025-02-02.

I wouldn't sign any contracts for that date, but in case you want a rough plan, now you know.

Edit: if something shifted, it would be earlier. Later than the start of the semester seems all but impossible.

@badnetmask I personally value privacy too much to be able to have peace of mind.

Prusa gives you the same, but with privacy.

@Quinnypig The opt-out is also weasel-wordy, as you can opt out from *Global* models -- are there non-global ones?

If you are covered under the GDPR, Article 28 allows you to audit them to a reasonable degree and request a Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA/TIA) under Article 35.
