One more thought on democratic processes on the fedi:
If we make democratic decisions based on the current (mostly white/tech/male) users, we could easily make the fedi more and more biased, exclusive, and insular.
So some projects and decisions that are unpopular with current fedi users are actually super important, as is @kissane's listening to non-users: https://erinkissane.com/mastodon-is-easy-and-fun-except-when-it-isnt
@ophiocephalic @jdp23 @tokyo_0 @misc @dalias @darnell I wholeheartedly agree that I want more buy-in for democratic fedi practices.
I also want people in charge to make decisions for me! E.g., I don't want to debate and vote on every single blocking decision.
What I do want is democratic accountability, and, for important issues, debates/votes.
Also, I'm for group governance (when feasible), rather than all the weight of an instance (or project) on single individuals.
@ophiocephalic @jdp23 @tokyo_0 @misc @dalias @darnell Also to tie back to before with the pain of switching instances:
Graeber and Wengrow in The Dawn of Everything mention 3 social freedoms:
1. Freedom to move
2. Freedom to disobey
3. Freedom to try new social arrangements
The current fediverse seems technically well suited for #3, I don't know how to apply #2 here, and the fedi is very limited in #1. If your identity and posts were more movable, I think that would make a big difference.
