    A month ago I had to deal with a moderation flag. One contributor to our project had flagged another user as using AI to answer questions in the user chat room.

    I still had to go through the process of detailing the complaint and talking to both sides privately. Despite knowing that the person they were complaining about was well known and was just from India so their language use was different

    AI Hyper Sensitivity sure looks like a real thing

    *sigh* I had a discussion with a Open Source social attendee here in #Boston and, they were absolutely woke-pilled for RMS. In a way that was just disheartening to see someone earnestly downplay the problematic behaviours, trash the safe guarding, the effectiveness of codes of conduct and how much everyone opposing RMS just wants to "tear down the GPL".

    They'd bought every low quality factoid. And I guess it just made me sad to actually meet an RFK level delusion in the Free Software community.

    I have a frustration. We publish #inkscape on the Microsoft Store, mostly for people who's workplaces or surface tablets forbid them from installing directly.

    But it's a headache. We have no employees, and the linux engineer who does the packaging is a volunteer. Week before last Inkscape's botched upgrade from 1.3.2 to 1.4.2 in the store (very late) caused about 4.5k people (real humans) to not be able to use Inkscape for an entire week before the install error was fixed.

    This is ... 1/2

    2/2 ... not good.

    This is the sort of problem that a paid version of Inkscape would be fixing, personally I don't think it responsible to offer a gratis version of Inkscape on any store. It creates a weird relationship where users *depend* on free labour and are at the same time alienated from being able to fix it.

    Why do we do this to ourselves? Ask people to depend on us, but provide no functioning economics to make it actually function?

    Gratis Software: The gift that keeps on taking.😮💨

    It's a similar thing for the macOS store. I'm not convinced the Inkscape volunteer project should be doing that work at all. I think an Inkscape for macOS business (worker owner coop or what have you) should be publishing Inkscape and making contributions back to the project.

    Because this *gestures widely* isn't working.

    I don't want to make an "#Inkscape Pro", it's divisive language.

    But I am interested in the idea of an "Inkscape Community Edition" which unlike pseudo-oss doesn't mean "the free one", it means "the paid one". You HAVE to pay for the community edition. Or you can contribute your time to the project, you also get it then.

    But this is because I'd like my users to understand their role and responsibility in maintaining the software they depend on. Without creating some judging people's art.

    I'd also be interested in a network of tools. So if you pay for #Gimp or #Krita or #Blender but not Inkscape. Perhaps you can also have the community edition.

    This edition does exactly the same thing by the way. There's never a difference in functionality. Just a marker that says you're doing the right thing.

    Maybe a different splash screen. For fun.

    The point is getting people into a relationship with the project so things can be maintained without suffering in silence.

    @futurebird thanks!

    She seems lethargic and not so much foraging, as sticking around in one place.

    I realised this morning that people outside this thread can't see any of the replies after this one.

    The good news is that she was carefully put into a cup and delivered to a small wood last night. The wood was damp and smelled of rotting wood so hopefully a fitting home. Big thanks to @futurebird for advice on what to do and identifying this ant queen. ❤️

    A funny thought happened: How old is rock paper scissors? Then i thought, what would this same game look like to a Paleolithic hunter? Or if I time traveled and wanted to play a game with one could I teach it so it made sense?

    I think rock. Rock is easy, rocks are rocks. Hand is next, replaces paper. Hand controls rock. Next is flint for scissors. Rock knaps flint, but flint cuts hand and hand controls rock.

    Rock, hand, flint.

    @jk

    Good thread.

    #foss often feels like the software of Theseus, except the onboard shipwrite is a kid who has to do all the carpentry because no one else will help, so things keep falling off as we sail.

    And I say that as someone constantly glueing bits of #inkscape back together after every release. The complexity begs for a hundred times the paid labour, but our economic proposition doesn't provide enough resource to staff things properly.
