@evan Facebook, Insta, Threads and Twitter. I do realise there are lot more but those seem to be the pre-accepted answers to ”what are your socials?” question around my neck of the woods.

@evan Yeah if we define Fediverse as ”general purpose social network” like the big four, then yes, it would disappear, but it’s questionable if we’re tall enough to be on that ride to begin with.
If Fediverse is ”connected network of communities” then no. The communities would lose some members but keep going, that’s the current ongoing trend anyway. But I think there will always be Fediverse communities on the internet

@elle @aral @_elena Yeah, but Mastodon isn't backed by the correct right-wing people, ex-politicians and other highflying socialites. W Social is.

@skinnylatte I think Portugal and handful of other EU countries have been taking on lot of wealthy, young American digital nomads in the past years and the trend will probably continue, but I think it might be a path only for privileged tech workers and influencers, not for everyone.

Finally got around to reading @pluralistic Enshittification - a shame it took me this long.
Important book. A must read for everyone.

@Viss @catsalad I'm sure they'll actually do better job running this place. Just remember to move all fragile things off the top shelves.

@tokyo_0 You might be right about the AI cases. But none of those have actually been resolved or even been to court yet so we lack precedent (and laws/policy). 2024 might well be the year when commercial entities are banned using public Internet (I doubt it though), but that's still in the future, no one knows the outcome. I doubt Meta counts "setting up a server in fediverse" in that basket of risks anyway.

@tokyo_0
Yeah IANAL either, that's why I asked.
I wasn't aware there being consent process when running an instance. The federation is automatic. The Mastodon API is public, it has no authorization at all and the protocol default (without AUTHORIZED_FETCH) is designed so that even suspended instances can still fetch data from the source. Stuff breaks otherwise. -

@tokyo_0 @andthisismrspeacock what's the legal risk, if I may ask? Doesn't every fedi instance run the same risk by federating this public post in that case?

@andthisismrspeacock Meta is in dire trouble with EU privacy watchdogs. They were already fined for $1.3bn and more is coming.
Fedi provides perfect cover. Now they can claim interoperability and no regulator can say otherwise.
Why would they ruin that?If they want, they can mine our data anyway, there's no privacy in the fediverse and we're a tiny drop in a huge sea.
We're not competitors. We don't even register. We're just a cover story. Alibi.
