@thefrankring Interesting. How is this at all different than downloading Debian, though? Yes, "it's Canadian," but what difference does that make to sovereignty or privacy? I'm genuinely asking!
#LiquidGlass is *nothing*. It's not even terrible enough to be remarkable. It is, however, confirmation that #Apple has no ideas for improving #UI / #UX and isn't truly interested in it. They've got nothing because that's not the business they're in any more.
@evacide I was just saying this to someone. Humans are very prone to projecting humanity onto... literally anything. Throw in logocentrism, and we're so so easy to fool.
Also, personally, I think all of that dialogue could have been so much more interesting if the brothers spoke casually with each other.
Instead of, "I cannot allow this," have older brother say, "Bro, I can't let you do that." Instead of "He thinks I am the weakest, so I must defeat the strongest" have little brother say, "Dad calls me the runt, but I'll show him."
Then, shift to formal speech for making the vow, and *maybe* the dad coming back.
@Em0nM4stodon I hate that I watch Star Trek now and cringe at communicators that always know where you are and constantly scan your vitals. We could have had tech that was *for* us instead of *for* the company that's renting it to us. That was the dream.
I'm considering switching from Debian to Fedora so that I can have Gnome updates in real time.
For context, I'm relatively new, and I did find Debian challenging at first, although at this point, I can do the installation without issue, and I've learned the basic ins and outs (although my Terminal skills are *meagre*).
Anybody have any opinions on that they want to share? Truly whatever you have to say is valuable to me.
@mekkaokereke I only found out a couple of years ago that Einstein was so disgusted with racism in American academia that he exclusively visited HBCU's later in his life.
I've noticed someone I know who was a huge "ai" booster until recently has started cooling on it, claiming they were never *that* into it. I suspect they see the burst coming and want to distance themselves. The ship is sinking, and folks are looking for life boats.
@nanianmichaels@tsyum@Endof10 This is very good advice: what programs do you need, and can you use them in Linux and/or can you find open-source substitutes?
@tsyum@nanianmichaels@Endof10 If you're interested in kinda generally "having a computer"--email, browser, making/editing documents--then Mint will cover your needs. It comes loaded with all those programs in the form of Thunderbird (email), Firefox (browser), and Open Office (documents). If those cover your needs, then you're done! Your system is as robust as it needs to be.
@tsyum@nanianmichaels@Endof10 And you're right on the money that the culture of Linux is: see one, do one, teach one. Once you know how to do things, you step up and help other people do those things. I'm a noob by most standards, but I do know how to get Linux onto your computer, and I know a few things about the various distributions and such, but I know nearly nothing about the coding.
@daemon_nova Sure, if you don't know that popular distros = more discussion online = more support, then you might go, "I like puppies!" and make a bad choice.
Hey, Linux people: a LOT of folks are screaming off Windows right now.
Be. Kind. To. Them.
They don't know much yet, so they are going to ask really basic questions. If you're KIND, you might get some to give it a try and stick to it bc they know they can ask for help. If you're unkind, you're showing them using Linux will be *worse* than Windows. If you can't bring yourself to be kind, then SAY NOTHING. Let others pick up that slack.
There's a #Firefox addon that fills out those "can we please track you forever?" cookie popups. I used it for years and loved it, but I lost it in a reinstall, and I cannot for the life of me remember what it's called.
it shows up as a dark blue box with light blue highlighting. If anyone knows what it is, please tell me. I miss it dearly.
@inthehands Tangent: we have plurality voting in Canada, and we have upwards of five parties that have real political impact. I only point that out to say that I don't think it's plurality that's keeping America to only two parties. I have no idea what created the situation, but I suspect it's something very specific to the US.
It's fascinating being on #mastodon as well as #bluesky. They really think they're the cuddliest liberals over there, and that maybe true, but mastodon is where you find spiky leftists.
Bluesky: "LOL! We love alt-text!"
Mastodon: "Use the fucking alt-text. We fought for that."
