    Today, I made a video #review for a new #linux #distro called Maple Linux. #maplelinux

Its purpose is to unite Canadians to strengthen #canada data and digital sovereignty.

I usually prefer posting my peertube link here, but my instance's SSL is expired. It actually happens frequently.

For now, here's my YouTube link:

    1. Maple Linux Review – A Canadian Linux Distro
      from Frank Ring
With the current world events, I believe Canada will need to work to built its own independence and digital sovereignty. Here, I'm always about Maple Linux, ...

      @OrionKidder
For now, I think Maple Linux is mostly just Debian using Cinnamon and branded for Canadians.

I'm assuming that the whole point of this distro is that it's built for canadians, by canadians.

Politically, since Canada is currently distancing themselves from the USA, I believe that this philosophy will become more and more important over time for canadians.

But we'll see over time how everything evolves I guess.

@thefrankring @OrionKidder I'm sorry, but if a Canadian takes part of a Chinese car and part of a German car and assembles them together into a car and paints a Canadian flag on it, it's NOT a car built for Canadians by Canadians.

@thefrankring Interesting. How is this at all different than downloading Debian, though? Yes, "it's Canadian," but what difference does that make to sovereignty or privacy? I'm genuinely asking!

@thefrankring Well, I should have said U.S. and German cars. Both are made from parts manufactured around the world (much in China). So I think my analogy--with a minor tweak--is a pretty decent one.

Yeah, but Linux is free and open source, nobody owns a project like Debian because it's built and maintained from people all around the world. So "Chinese" and "German" don't really apply.

While it is true that for now, Maple Linux is just like any other Debian distro.

But it is new and I think we should give them a chance to see if they are able to distinguish themselves as a "canadian" distro.

@thefrankring I think what bothers me most is this comes across as nationalism. And I'm not sure that's a good thing given the nationalistic trends of some countries and the problems that's created.

@thefrankring Kylin was created *for* the Chinese military....not created by some Chinese blokes and then adopted by the military. And it's not advertised as made by Chinese for Chinese.

      Maple Linux is an oddball.

Thank you, I just learned that China has many linux distros. They were initially created to reduce dependencies from foreign OS.

Some of them like Kylin are been used in chinese government and military.

Some of them are based on Debian/Ubuntu like Deepin

Fair point! I still like the idea of a Canadian distro though, assuming it will get better.

@thefrankring But what defines a "Canadian distro"? The project founder being Canadian? The word Canadian on the website? All contributors being Canadian? It's not a company registered in Canada--it's just three guys. If the guys weren't Canadian, would it be a Canadian distro all else being equal?

To me, it comes across as fake--nothing more than a nationalistic response to a nationalistic southern neighbor.

I think that's a question we have to answer for ourselves, as Canadians.

Who are the Canadians without the US? What do we stand for?

      and go from there

But I think it is still very early.
