@bmacDonald94 I prefer hoping for the best rather than expecting it, so I don't get sad when my life (and my house) inevitably can't fit all of my ambitions :P

I propose replacing calories with watt-hours.
- Almost same value (1 kilocalorie / Calorie is ~1.1 watt-hours)
- more intuitive for people who use electricity
- never the confusion between calories (science), Calories (food, which is technically kilocalories), kilocalories, and 'kilo Calories' (which is technically megacalories)
- you get to feel more like a robot with your 2.5kwh power consumption a day which may feel like validation to some creatures on this fediverse
- become powered by cake -

A Snickers is about 570Wh, which is like eating a very sizable ebike battery's entire charge in one go.
A Big Mac slightly tops that with about 650Wh. A slice of pizza is about half that with 340Wh.
Meanwhile, fruits like apples/bananas are in the ~100-130 watt-hour oversized twice laptop battery ballpark, and a cup of greek yogurt is about the same, so a big cup of fruit-filled yogurt is still less calories than a big mac or snickers!
A full english breakfast can be over 1kWh! Quickcharge ⚡⚡

Underrated simple dish: boiled beans with bacon (Spekbonen in Dutch)
It's like edamame except instead of pure salt you use bacon. It doesn't need anything else, no extra spices, nothing.
I did add some dried apricots which I personally thought were a really nice addition to the flavour, but even without that it's honestly incredibly tasty.

supposedly, the whole UK and USA age verification thing has been pushed by a single data mining company that also sells age verification software, so it's purely about money.

Even if that gossip isn't true, the fact they're involved with Trump's deportations, and built 'predictive policing' software makes me feel icky about them tbh.

I wonder what'd happen if you made a terminal that's entirely an interface to some LLM, and everything you type in is interpreted by the LLM and translated into bash or python before it's run without any confirmation

user: hey could you rename these directories so they're all named consecutively
LLM: sure *renames all folders to a single name*
user: nono wait you just merged all of those directories can you undo that
LLM: sure *rm -rf's the folder, makes beautiful empty new directories*
user: you just deleted everything
LLM: oh god I'm so sorry *makes new empty files in the empty directories*
user: you just made empty files
LLM: oh god I'm so sorry *cats /dev/random into the files*

I find it extremely funny that, no matter what type of chatbot I try to build (markov, transformer, other RNN types), when I train it on my own posts, it ALWAYS ends up generating extremely long run-on sentences.
*reads the above* .. GEE I WONDER WHY :drgn_think_woozy:

@skinnylatte yea big mood there, I definitely miss the stuff I had in the city area too. And SE Asian streetfoods always seemed amazing, never actually been there to try them myself, but I've seen plenty videos of it and it always looked really good.
Maybe you could get it on a holiday or something.. I can imagine the favorites are the complex ones to replicate though, I definitely had similar issues at the beginning when I was still looking for some easy but tasty recipes to keep returning to.

@skinnylatte I can imagine that can feel confronting. I personally left the city about 4 years ago and I can kinda relate there.
Do you like cooking yourself? I personally found a lot of joy in finding out how simple some of my favorite dishes were to make once I got the hang of it.
Noodles and asian (wok/hotpot/etc) dishes are kinda nice in that sense because they're extremely flexible and you can buy exactly the ingredients that you like, you should try searching for some recipes online!

@skinnylatte so I feel like I'm weirdly between opinions there.
I absolutely love cooking myself and tasting other people's creations and that of good restaurants and such, both the mundane but good local dishes or exotic things of all kinds.
..but I can also relate to some days where I don't even really feel like eating at all and I just need some mealreplacement shake thing or whatever to sustain myself, or when I'm busy, or when I'm out hiking, etc. Though that's been a lot less recently ig

I hope it doesn't need saying but:
Do NOT use USB splitters if one of the devices supports quickcharge or USB-PD.
If you use a splitter to e.g charge a phone while also connecting a DAC or speaker or whatever, the phone might negotiate 9, 12 or even 20V from the USB port the splitter is plugged into, which will cause everything else on that same splitter that only supports 5v to get fried.
I've seen some reports of people accidentally running into this.. So please be careful with splitters.

@mattly it's based on the same concepts as (trackerless) Torrents. AFAIK it uses a DHT (Distributed Hash Table) to find and connect to other nodes you own, and uses this for "UDP hole punching", which allows it to communicate with other nodes you own after the connection has been set up. This works by having every node participate in this DHT, just like with Torrent clients. I guess in addition they might also have relays.
I get it feels weird though, I also prefer just self hosting things.
