As we speak, #Google probably has twenty departments all trying to invent yet another confusing chat/videoconferencing system that nobody wants, to pit the newest contender in a battle royale against the undead corpses of their dozens of other conflicting #bigtech products/brands, a triennal deathmatch where the only prize is ranking on https://killedbygoogle.com
@monster Timing-wise, that sounds unlikely: Chrome team's rejection happened months before Apple announced intent to ship. Legend goes that Apple's community collaborators were the ones who convinced Apple.
JPEG XL was co-invented by Google Research Europe… just a different office/department from the Chrome team. Stubborn conflict of interest (the person who removed the Chromium JXL code is a WebM & AVIF co-author) & internal power struggles seem more likely than "revenge against Apple" to me?
#JPEGXL / #JXL, the most requested and upvoted focus area proposal for #web#Interop, has again been rejected as a discussion topic for 2024's web platform Interop industry event, because "We did not have consensus to include this proposal."
Given the industry's broad support, lack of "consensus" sounds an awful lot like "the Google Chrome team lead who authored the AVIF format arranged for it to be vetoed." https://github.com/web-platform-tests/interop/issues/430
Since I like to live dangerously, I have now filed another #UX annoyance bug report in #LibreOffice regarding Writer's in-margin comments: the total absence of padding between the comments' edge and the text. There should be small (ex: 6 pixels) amount of padding next to the left (or right, in RTL languages) edge.
Just discovered that the original (German military) "jerrycans" fuel canisters' #design featured three handles at the top, among other things. It allows carrying by two people jointly, or carrying two empty cans in each hand for a single person. That was some really clever #industrialdesign there, and I wish I could easily find these as a civilian, for house chores. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerrycan#Design
I know Mozilla wants to eventually redesign the #Firefox bookmarks creation/editing dialog's #UX#design & implementation someday, but since it's been over six years… so in the meantime I figured I might as well report one of the most annoying bugs with the existing implementation: that wonky wiggling width! You won't be able to un-see the demonstration video attached there. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1877009
For the past 20 years I've been occasionally using the fantastic https://soundconverter.org batch audio format converter/transcoder app for #Linux (made with #Python, @GTK and @gstreamer), and it amazes me how it still works so simply and reliably. I just freed up 10 GB of disk space by converting a bunch of WAV files to #FLAC this morning! Amazing piece of software 👌️ Merci @kassoulet for maintaining it with sezanzeb!
The patched version of #Mutter + #GNOME Shell I've been running for the last few days, while profiling with @YaLTeR, is _crazy_ fast. This is the first time in *13 years* that my GNOME Shell isn't slowing down after a few hours/days. Even _without_ triple-buffering.
It is so smooth, I can't stop moving windows around just to savor how unreal it feels. Turns out I never experienced 60 fps (with & without #Wayland) in GNOME in my life, until this week.
I really hope the future #Fedora web installer will be much more reliable & performant than what we've had for the past 10+ years, because I suffer everytime I need to use the current version of #Anaconda. It's just super fragile.
It randomly hangs, crashes or slugs around, whether you're trying to pick the language, set up network (for the netinstaller), and to use the partitioning tool (any of the three variants). Everytime I have to touch this Ming vase, I ponder my #Linux distro choices.
@hergertme@me If upstream GNOME Terminal forbids manually setting/pinning a custom title for a tab, that is a rather unfortunate decision in my humble personal opinion 🤷️
The fact that GNOME Terminal (in Fedora at least) still lets me do this, and that GNOME Console hasn't implemented it (yet?) is 100% the one and only reason why I am not using GNOME Console (even though I would want to), no jokes. I can't keep track of my shite otherwise.
Recently discovered the "Identity" images & videos comparison tool by @YaLTeR ; a fantastic #GNOME app I did not know I needed until now.
Not only is it useful to compare #photography works, it lets me compare video encodes by playing them side by side; being able to quickly and confidently throw out inferior versions lets me free up a ton of disk space!
If you're still seeing slowdowns / performance degradation over time in #GNOME Shell / #Mutter 45 on #Wayland (with #Intel & #AMDgpu graphics) on #Linux : grab #sysprof, debuginfo packages, & see if you can profile & find causes?
Added a 16 GB RAM stick to my #ThinkPad T480 this morning, raising it from 8 GB to 24 GB of RAM. Now I'll be able to safely run #Firefox _and_ #GNOMEWeb at the same time 😂️
