    @Jain Also, let's be real: samsung probably wouldn't like mtkclient either since it allows you to break the chain of trust.

    The device I have uses Samsung Knox, but saying that the device firmware is trusted on that device is highly misleading at best - using the kamakiri exploit, anyone with physical access to the device can unlock the bootloader and modify the firmware, and if that's not stealthy enough you can flash a new bootloader too.

    @Jain no, you don't understand-

    mtkclient isn't made by samsung. and it isn't made by mediatek either. and it's not even made *for* samsung devices specifically. it's just a generic tool made by hobbyists that uses exploits (in my case with the galaxy tab a7 lite, it uses the kamakiri exploit) to allow you to flash images to the device etc.

    @Jain thankfully, for the MediaTek-based Samsung devices you can just use mtkclient, which is waaay easier.

    How do I know this? I've done it before: https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_Tab_A7_Lite_(samsung-gta7litewifi)

    @bubbline https://blob.cat/notice/AXKg3cTII9YHT24eBM

    TL;DR The instance admins did NOT handle @Jain's criticism and instead got very toxic. Because of that mess I no longer even think about recommending tech.lgbt.

    @mia wait WHAT?!

    I should note though that instantly fediblocking them would most likely create more problems than it solves. I agree with @Jain that we should be working with instance admins (and not against them) and defederation should only be used as a last resort.

    @fsf I did my part and emailed the FTC about it, giving a detailed explanation of why Web Environment Integrity is a bad idea and cannot be allowed to exist. I also linked to several other articles on it, including the one on defectivebydesign.org.

    I also use Firefox.

    @Jain I've seen that before, but I think CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 could make it quite difficult since I need it to be AGPLv3-compatible.

    As stated at https://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.html#CC-BY-NC:

    > This license does not qualify as free, because there are restrictions on charging money for copies. Thus, we recommend you do not use this license for documentation.

    Including it separately would probably be fine though.

    @Jain I figured there would definitely be some amount of manual cleanup that needs to be done 😅

    afaik blobs are also Apache-2.0 licensed but that is going to be painful to verify

    @fu @fsf I think a more realistic focus would be improving them, but yes, there really needs to be more competent school systems in the US.

    @fsf I hate nonfree school software.

    As someone from Virginia, I have to do the SOL test, and the only computerized way to do it is via TestNav, which is nonfree and literally owned by Pearson.

    They claim to have a GNU/Linux version (although it's still nonfree), but it's broken. I had to use a burner Windows VM to get it done. *sigh*

    I'm really annoyed by it, and I really want to be able to use free software for it.

    And no, doing the physical test is not an option for me.

    Not only does it actually respect user freedom, but it's simply better in general from a usability perspective.
