"Real life" means actions that have consequences.

Opinions on social media are the result of moderators, who monetize the drama of conflict.

Nahhh . . . it's play-acting without consequences. "Social media is reality" is a selling-point for advertisers. Actions have consequences, not content in a medium controlled by algorithms.

Nothing said on surveilled social media is meaningful. The more bold and defying, the more subject to corruption and coopting.

The revolution will not be televised. Or elevated by the status quo. Or given the win by the referee.

And the pundits will bicker with the winners. Because that's their bread and butter.

You told me that your opinion of Mastodon depended on how much money they sent you. You can't squirm out of that judgement by claiming you're a non-profit—but you "really need" money.

Did you —really— "break a story" though? Or were you the first who published what was well-known, but many were struggling to make known?

Your whole "but still—Capitalism?!?" reeks of the monarchists who infest post-capitalist marketplaces. We also call them magats and fascists.

Stick to steak knives (at least it's honest), although I hear silver-infused bedsheets also do well.

Read Marcy Wheeler/emptywheel for examples of 'actual' no-one-pays journalism.

I am a musician. You've got nothing to school me with about working for free.

Of course. Troll for more money. Our ways are not separate, but our means to our ends define us.

I will match your barely adequate investigating with Marcy Wheeler's any day. Your 'breaking' claims are pretty irrelevant. The truth was there—it matters not who was first, but who made it MATTER.

You come to us with hat in hand, but suggesting that getting my goat is a discourse ender. Maybe my goat was got when you decided to monetize your virtue. I suggest you re-evaluate your 'yeah-but-ish' mentality.

Yeah, just walk away. . .

Nothing like being told it's only my money that matters. Mastodon only matters to you if it means your "team" doesn't need to work hard to fund it.

Swallow your pride—sell some steak knives or whatever. The corruption of the Supreme Court is well and heavily covered by all your competitors. For free.

Btw, while they're collecting what's owed from Trump:

In the '90s, I was assigned to temp—for one day—at Trump's main office.

They scheduled an 8- hour block behind a desk, sent me home after lunch (so it was really 4 hours) then refused to pay for the remaining 4 hours (which I could have made up somewhere else, had my company known).

The bitch still owes me $64.

Resistance fighters, (as well as gangsters), know that the most secure method is face-to-face, with no record.

We've been isolated and alienated by the convenience of the internet. It creates the illusion that words are a form of action.

Action among people who organize face-to-face is the best strategy. (Which means I need to put down this phone—but we're not at the point you fear yet . . .)

I'll have no problem honoring this boycott, but you won't like the reason.

(Hint: I would never subscribe to these 'luxury lifestyle' rags anyway. What a waste of Journalism tuition.)

Also, it's a BOYCOTT, not a picket line. Didn't they teach you anything in college? It's bad enough that politicians ignore facts . . .

The real problem with the whole idea of 'arguing' with maga/fascists is this:

Their argument is "we believe in rule by the strong man, who is ONLY a traitor to his people when he is weak.

"When he is cruel, when he lies, when he breaks promises, when he betrays—he is acting as the strong man, and being true to his brliefs

"But when you—who believe in 'the rule of law'—do the same, you are acting against your own principles."

Now this is a logically sound argument. But it is not what any sane person wants.

The first qanon was Socrates, who was "only asking questions". And was also an apologist for slavery, and rule by powerful elite.

When the riots began in Detroit in '67, I watched soldiers in camo wave to me as they passed over us in Huey helicopters.

All the way from Viet Nam! I thought.

Then I saw the tanks rolling through Detroit.

"How did they get tanks here so fast?" I asked my dad.

"Well, there's a tank arsenal just up the road, a few minutes away."

When newspapers described the attack on MOVE in Philly, years later, as the "first time" the military attacked civilians, I chuckled bitterly at the naivity of mainstream media.

    @belehaa @inthehands Yeah, but it's a dodge, not engagement.

"How so?" or similar, forces them to expose their insinuations, which they are afraid to do (or else they would have stated them upfront).

Getting a fascist/sexist/etc to explain themself will always be their downfall. And you are really speaking to listeners, not the fascist.

You can never 'debate' a fascist. Not in good faith, anyway . . .
