Some good and beautiful news. Five years after the invasive rodent eradication program on #LordHoweIsland native birds, plants and insects have rebounded far faster than expected, with Lord Howe Woodhen population increasing tenfold to over 2,000 birds. Coral and palm recovery has rebounded from drought and bleaching.

Our paradise Island is doing well, a testament to a culture of belonging, protection and a close bond to the place to which they belong.

Bar Tailed Godwit called "234684" by humans is one of the worlds most notrious private binge flyers. At 5 months old, they racked up a non-stop 11 days straight binge private flight from #Alaska to #Tasmania recording 13,560km worth of frequent flier points.

A bird weighing about 500 grams that can neither swim nor glide, relying on constant beating of their wings to stay aloft, can fly almost twice as far as the original jumbo jet, and consumes a few hundred grams of fat to do so.

They also have specially adapted eyes that literally allow them to see the magnetic field of the Earth to guide them, as well as using celestial navigation by the stars at night.

@jeffowski @ikentcpel This is true. It's also true that our current consumption levels are wildly unsustainable. Monocrop agriculture as it's practiced day causes massive soil loss that is only compensated for by constantly "clearing" new land and heavy use of fossil fuel based petrochemical fertilisers. Almost all fisheries are dealing with unsustainable takes and many have collapsed or are on the verge of it. Aquaculture is ironically responcile for much of this as the species humans favour in aquaculture are carnivorous, so actually encourage more overfishing to supply the feed for aquaculture species.

The situation with timber and with metal ore mining and processing for shelter is similarly unsustainable, not to mention energy needs, consumer goods etc. etc.

Reducing production and ensuring equitable distirbution would go a long way to correct this, but part of that does mean that many people in the global west will need to get a reality check. Billionaires a bit part of the problem, but overconsumption doesn't stop there. Middle class conspicuous consumption by the lawn loving "aspirational" classes of suburban Adelaide need to give up the yank tank and their frequent flier status

@elmyra @gerrymcgovern My view is that #degrowth is inevitable and unavoidable simply because infinite growth is literally impossible and always has been.

The question is thus not "Should we pursue degrowth?" but rather "Do we want a managed and organised degrowth, shaped and influenced by human society and our democratic wishes. Or, do we wait for catastrophic, uncontrolled degrowth dished out by natural forces that neither knows nor cares of our collective hopes, dreams and aspirations for society?"

If we have any concern whatsoever for bodycount, we will go with the former.
