yes, this is a pain. What you are describing is basically a "quote post" which mastodon does not support.
There are other services that do support via #fep-e232

Are we going to be able to register a additional public key to use for encrypted messages?
This way you can encrypt and send messages but we can decrypt on device?
Right now only the #activitypub server implementation holds your private key. So not really end to end.
@johnonolan I know you can’t read this yet on #threads but federating a existing service is not that complicated.
The #activitypub specification allows you to implement things in an incremental way.
I worked in federation of our #flipboard network.
Federating #ghost can’t be that complicated.

I really wish there was something more akin to DID support in the ActivityPub protocol.
Then I could be @jason.mischievous.org and my handle is no longer tied to a server.
```
$ dig +short -t txt _atproto.jason.mischievous.org
"did=did:plc:d4yzg3vadl536rkihgygkvv6"
```
```
$ curl -s "https://plc.directory/did:plc:d4yzg3vadl536rkihgygkvv6" | jq
Any idea what could cause this?
Hi our servers are on AWS abd i am unable fetch resources from your site using those servers. For instance I can see that our server is attempting to fetch your remote key using a signed http request to https://fediversity.site/channel/mikedev?operation=rsakey. Also I cannot webfinger you account from our server. Is is possible that your are blocking traffic from our egress?
if you are in the #sfbay area or #sanfrancisco @Flipboard now breaks out the local news from @AxiosNews into groups you can follow vs the entire feed. I'm now following the local feed @axios-local-san-francisco-AxiosNews
@mike @ValueSubtracted @acquirer @theverge @greg
We are aware that there is an issue where pleroma returns a 400 when we try to accept the follow request.
@mike @osma@mas.to @mike@flipboard.com @osma@fishpool.org @greg are you running in aws? Can you check what IP address is being resolved? I’ll follow up in this if discover anything. There’s no enforced authentication on our webfinger endpoint.
Out here defending the yard at night from both ends. #catsofmastodon
@seanbala @NewsDesk @Flipboard @mike you should be able to access your Mastodon lists. If you are having issues let me know, I’ll point you in the right direction.
@mike @seanbala @NewsDesk @Flipboard You can put the news desk account on your TOC. Also, do you just want access to your mastodon lists in flipboard? We could probably make that happen, they would show up as a category in the UI here.
Software Engineer @Flipboard If it's broke, I might fix it. Crushing it always 🤙🏻I work on the #fediverse #ActivityPub and #mastodon for flipboard I am open to your suggestions.See my flipboard profile for mostly testing and Cats.
