@whitequark @jonathanhogg It's funny that "professional" is sometimes used to confer higher quality than hobbyist because professionals so often are in a fast, good, or cheap situation, choose two, and the person paying absolutely does not care about good. Hobbyists can and often do indulge in the good metric.

@TimWardCam @bmacDonald94 What's funny about this is beliefs are causally efficacious, regardless of determinism. So whether you believe you have free will or not, that affects your behavior. It's practical to behave as though you have free will despite a free-will-less philosophy. It is hard to find characters in fiction though who live with the impractical nihilistic interpretation. I believe the only time I've seen it is in No Country For Old Men (2007).

@obscurestar @bmacDonald94 Extrinsic motivators often substitute intrinsic motivators, and religion is full of extrinsic motivators. I agree it’s projection from someone who had their intrinsic motivations to be kind substituted. When they talk about it, it sounds psychotic to those who haven’t substituted their intrinsic motivations to be kind.

SALLY STRUTHERS: Do you use floats? Sure. We all do. But did you know a + b + c ≠ c + b + a with many floats? No. Well, neither did I, but with this one PDF you can become a fount of floating-point foibles to impress and depress your colleagues around the water cooler. Isn't this fun?

#hottip: For a short-lived #git feature branch whose merge you dread with a conflicting target branch, SQUASH the feature branch down to one commit. That way you don't have to fix up the history of N commits; you can just fix up 1 commit that matters to the result.
Of course, don't do this if the history of the feature branch is important to you.

@j_bertolotti It'd be interesting if AI companies lobbied to increase the works in the public domain by decreasing copyright duration. That's something I'd actually support. Copyright is too long. And it would then be a legal, more ethical, industry instead of pack of VC-funded thieves. Strange bedfellows.

I recently learned a distinction between efficient and effective resource allocation. Efficient means a resource is ready to be used as soon as it’s available like a full parking lot, and effective means a resource is available when we’re ready to use it like an empty parking lot.
I kind of love it because my wife is all about efficiency, but now I can champion its dual.
