It's very on-brand for Mastodon to turn even more obnoxious & sanctimonious as we watch Bluesky sucking in tech Twitter.

Ppl KNOW that Mastodon exists—& they hate it. The reasons why they hate it have been known for years but nothing has been done about it.

Being condescending to users for wanting to be hand-held or have effective protections against the very reply guys that are going around scolding the impure is just proving them right.

No amount of dirt-digging on Bluesky will change that.

Of course, given it’s a translation, the Python doesn’t look very idiomatic to me, but that’s to be expected and at least it removes a major point of friction to understand what the book is teaching. 🎉

@offby1 @glyph @brettcannon It’s really sad to watch Mastodon lose to Bluesky but if you look closer it makes all the sense in the world. The obnoxious echo chamber energy is only rivaled by mid-2000 IRC channels and we aren’t even the target demographic. It’s enough to just watch what’s scrolling by.

@brettcannon @glyph @offby1 Plushies are the equivalent of your spouse that has decided to leave you months ago getting agitated by your traits they found initially endearing. It’s annoying to have my TL spammed with it but it takes like two clicks to mute them forever.

@buttondown I THINK my problem was actually that the form is not active until fully filled out? It said PM greyed out but I had to type it in too, for the form to react. What I thinking is needed is some very clear visual indication that the form is incomplete and therefore whatever is inside is ignored.

@buttondown I have some unsolicited feedback: the scheduled send fields are very misleading in behavior. I just forgot to fill out the “PM” part and the newsletter went out immediately with no really indication. 😬 I kinda presumed that the greyed out contents is the fallback default.

@buttondown ahh I’ve been looking from a phone and it somehow glitched… thanks! Tangentially, I would love to pay you… some… money to not be a free user, but it feels like people like me (500–1000 subscribers, fewer than 10 emails per year) just don’t have a place in anybody’s pricing table. I guess thanks for keeping me around grandfathered into a legacy plan!

@buttondown firstly, thanks for fixing the signup form (or did my ad blocker fix it? :D) secondly, is there any way to get some kind of stats on the number of RSS subscribers of a newsletter?

I’ve changed my editor background to a light theme just to troll the judgy Real Programmers™ crowd and now I kinda like it among others because it’s a nice obvious contrast to my dark terminal window. 🤓
