OK, what's happened to cause all the Mastodon/Bluesky chatter? Is it the series A funding for Bluesky, or something else? There's been an uptick of followers for me (https://bsky.app/profile/snarky.ca) as well as general commenting about the two here.

  @hynek @graingert @brettcannon @glyph @offby1 I didn't realize the toys were offputting to anyone. Then again in the past I've often heard similar complaints about how many cat photos I boost. I am alive, not just some brand account. Those are the things that I find joy in. If you want a sterilized experience, just follow @Mastodon instead.

  @glyph @offby1 @brettcannon we can always hope for some VC dick move, but other than that… turns out people don’t enjoy righteous scolding. who knew. this constant “how can people be there and not here” is turning off even me.
  the fact that the last waves went there and not here is a very bad sign. Especially all of Brazil but also Kelsey now siphoning off tech people? :-/

  @brettcannon @glyph @offby1 Plushies are the equivalent of your spouse that has decided to leave you months ago getting agitated by your traits they found initially endearing. It’s annoying to have my TL spammed with it but it takes like two clicks to mute them forever.

  @offby1 @glyph @brettcannon It’s really sad to watch Mastodon lose to Bluesky but if you look closer it makes all the sense in the world. The obnoxious echo chamber energy is only rivaled by mid-2000 IRC channels and we aren’t even the target demographic. It’s enough to just watch what’s scrolling by.

  @hynek @offby1 @brettcannon I am still pretty optimistic. About mastodon, anyway. If I'm being clear-eyed about the whole thing, I do not think that any of us are particularly qualified to predict the success of social networks. But we're definitely not in a death spiral yet.
  c.f. the old "Linux on the Desktop" joke; on the one hand, a big failure to achieve its stated goals. On the other hand, the Steam Deck.

  @brettcannon bluesky funding, the latest Musk outrage lead to a huge boost in bluesky user count, while mastodon stayed flat. Plus there has been a huge amount of posting about plushes, which comes across as poorly timed at a moment where mastodon is so badly losing the race for twitter refugees

  @hynek @graingert @brettcannon @glyph @offby1 Yes, that sounds about right. For what it's worth, people have been asking for a stuffed toy for years, and the production was launched in January. It takes a long time to produce and transport custom toys, so any overlap with any current events is purely coincidental.
