If you like this, you’re going to love my other hits:
A dismissal is a dismissal is a dismissal
If you think they’re going to terminate your employment at the agreed end of a fixed term appointment, it’s still a dismissal.
If they move you onto another contract with disadvantageous terms, such as “take this fixed term contract to get out of the redundancy pool”, that also is a type of dismissal.
Talk to your union at the first imaginings of a dismissal in your future.
Look, I don’t know how this stuff works in the US, but this takes me to a SERIOUSLY important point in UK employment law, that a lot of people seem to have missed…
UK friends: When you resign, you make it your own choice to leave. There is no redundancy due, you have no claim for unfair dismissal… no claim on the employer at all, really.
If they’re threatening to fire you on spurious grounds, sit tight and make the fuckers fire you!
Finally, UK friends: straitened times are on the cards for us too. UK public servants are relatively better protected legally, culturally, and by strong collective bargaining, but every day we’re hearing about threats of redundancy…
You need a trade union right now. Every UK worker has a right to join one, whether or not your employer recognises it.
If you need help finding the union best suited to you/your workplace, check out the TUC, or feel free to ask.
#WeekendSewingClub holiday special… this is the face of a woman thinking “fuck you I won”.
I jettisoned the coat I started last week (energy too scarce to waste on a project that doesn’t excite me), and redirected attention to the water-resistant, bonded houndstooth wool, but with a ‘simple’ cape pattern (new look, N6768).
“Would you recommend Microsoft Excel to a friend or colleague?”
Are you actually kidding me? If there’s a single person left on the planet who doesn’t know, for their own purposes, exactly what to think of Excel/Teams/outlook/allTheOtherShit, then I am not going to be responsible for shattering their peace.
3.5 hours of #autism assessment this afternoon. They’d estimated 3 hours, but I guess they got more than they bargained for when they asked: “How do you feel about rules?”
Holy shit… it turns out I have A LOT of feelings about rules.
Emailing the NHS #autism assessment team… “I know this could still be a while, but are we thinking months or years?”
I do realise they’re swamped, but maybe they could do an automated email like once a quarter: “We haven’t forgotten; you’re still on the list; it’s currently about 47 years…”
Seriously: know your audience, people. The knowledge-vacuum is intolerable!
“I don’t want it to be a distraction from the campaign, I should have thought how it looks.”
Lolz. I’d bet at least a tenner that the Tories leaked this deliberately, precisely because they DO want a distraction from the campaign, and at this point any distraction will do.
Apropos of oh-holy-shit-I’ve-got-3-working-days-to-do-ALL-THE-THINGS, I’m reading self-help articles about how to deal with the #SundayScaries…
My God, some of the advice is SHOCKING:
“Make your weekend more enjoyable by doing work at a café, or in your pyjamas”
🫠
However bad things might be, at least I know that working (at 3am) on my days off is a shit idea, and both unsustainable and counterproductive as a habit.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned from living with #MECFS, it’s that “a change is as good as a rest” is just not true.
In the absence of rest, a change *might* be better than nothing, but you still need rest - and REGULARLY.
Eg: 1hr physical exertion + 1h mental exertion is better than 2hrs mental exertion, but neither gives any rest at all. You might not know it, but your cortisol levels and your nervous system absolutely do.
Here it is, damned nearly finished… the asymmetrical neckline dress, with self-drafted skirt in blue/black microcheck.
There are things I could criticise about this, but it has been all kinds of an experiment from the start, so the fact that it’s turned out wearable is a bonus.
Note the combo of internal corset and heavy-gauge concealed zip. It’s not very constrictive, but the zip is under a bit of tension with the lining.
Trade union nerd-mascot ; #dataArchitect ; #autistic ; she/her Reformed oceanographer, turned #DataManagement professional, turned #TradeUnion officer. I’m interested in data as a tool of union activity, and unions’ role as the moderator of workplace data & tech #tradeUnions ; #data ; science ; dogs ; #sewing ; equalities. Fundamentally ungovernable.
