@dalias @wwahammy @artemis This. Compliance can look like foot dragging and endless committee meetings about how exactly to comply with unclear and contradictory regulation. The Debian list posts noting that compliance in one jurisdiction could be violation in another are a great beginning of sitting down and engineering a feature to either death or satisfaction, which is what actual legal compliance looks like; ad-hoc implementations don't have enough lawyers involved to legally function.

@ShaulaEvans @bookstodon I work in an industry that doesn't understand itself as a workshop, and isn't grounded in identifying process friction or the need for invisible work. That book taught me more that most university classes.

@ShaulaEvans @bookstodon A random handbook about setting a storefront for a shoe repair business. It was the first (and to a large extent last) time i saw an end to end description of how a work becomes a workshop. How visible and invisible tasks interplay, the role of appearances and underlying reality, balance of flexibility and record keeping, importance of maintenance and tool placement and ergonomics... it also taught me a fair bit about fixing my shoes.

Look, I didn't exactly wander into a bookshop in a back alley looking for texts on magical dark arts... that's just what happens when one does mathematics, right? 🙃

@tek @lordbowlich different packs are designed for the waist / hip strap to land at different heights, so... sometimes. Also stinkingly often people get the hip strap but don't USE the hip strap!

Looking for documents I know I've read before...
Human interface guidelines, from before the Great Dark Pattern Vortex.
Contains stuff like "surface the error near the action," "information needed for a decision should be on screen," "dismissables are a bad pattern but if used should be retrievable afterward from a log," "clearly mark which actions have side effects."
edit: also interested in guidelines for ui used under stressful conditions.

@chris I fed it something innocuous and it decided I was an angsty middle eastern descent barely-not-poor person in dubai who needed ads for personal security products, qaran apps, and xanax. Never feed these machines; not only will they target you, they are also frequently completely wrong. (The photo was of my knee and some notebooks on a patio??)

@chris Also great tool though for introspecting the machine; yikes. I would never have guessed just how far off it would be. Maybe it's biased against people who sit on the ground. I knew it could profile people and detect locations, which is why I tend toward contextually tight photos, but I hadn't thought through that modern AI's inability to say "unknown" could misprofile me that hard.

@rysiek @ll1t @0xfffffffe Location data is in my opinion probably worth an "adjust settings so this is harder to hit without user interaction", as you suggested up-thread, for people with moderate risks. It has a nasty tendency to be possible to refine over time, in the hands of persistent stalkers.

@alcinnz And yet somehow we are stuck with context unaware git merge. 🤷♂️ What would developer expectations of minimum software capability look like if our own tooling wasn't conceptually decades out of date...

@Polychrome And as a plus? It got my kid interested in _both reading and history_. So, major win in my book. Even if her way of expressing that was to respond to a history lesson with "Omgs it's just real life fnaf! So much child murder." which uhm, ok? I guess? Not what I'd normally call a selling point, that.

@Polychrome I am a computer nerd and I just learned this word. Perhaps it's shininess nerds who use it? It's good though, should be spread.
