@ophiocephalic Absolutely correct, and this is why I'm really disappointed in him. Like, I do (kind of) understand the idea he has of trying to walk a middle ground and keep everyone happyish, but he's falling into the same problem most centrists doing that do.

I mean, I think the direction he's coming at it from really is being convinced we can somehow "win the capitalists over" but we all know THAT DOESN'T WORK and inviting capitalism into any space is asking to get colonized and incorporated into it.

@nightowl THIS. I wish more people understood that maintaining extant downloaded versions of *anything* is the only way to preserve it. Strict obedience to copyright systems and only accepting things you're not allowed to own a permanent copy of ensures they will disappear, with *no* way of ever accessing them again.

While, if you *have* the file(s) somewhere on a media where they can be retrieved, you have a primary copy. Original design before any AI-design remakes, pre-censorship (even in the cases where the censorship is good/necessary, it's important to at least document that it happened and WHY it was), etc etc.

The fedi (and online in any way unless you PERSONALLY know the people you’re engaged with and can trust them with your life, you are *only* using E2EE and not on surface web, etc) is NOT a place for actions or serious plans for them beyond those that have legal safe harbor for now (e.g. electioneering/voting/running for office, planned peaceful protest, boycotts, complaints, lawsuits, nonviolent strikes/labor organizing, malicious compliance, and the like)

And if those particular ones are criminalized - shut up about them too.

Online is a place for words, theories, being your full self, exposing harm being done - lots of things in our lives, but not for getting other people in trouble because you want to be both the mouth and the hand.

Like... this is *terrifying,* even if it's momentarily good for Ukraine for distracting *both* Putin and the Wagners - nothing like your enemies fighting each other - but a nuclear-armed fascist regime pulling itself apart at the seams over how it performs fascism... eeeeeek!

Keeping your bar from becoming a nazi bar doesn't *only* mean kicking out the nazis that show up to drink and party.

It means making sure a rich nazi just doesn't straight up buy it and become the new boss regardless of what anyone else thinks.

It means making sure your locksmith, bouncer, structure itself isn't giving nazis means of entry where they can get one in, then another, then another until the whole mob is in.

It means making sure the land the bar's on isn't owned by a rich nazi.

Defense in depth.

And letting Facebook in is essentially breaching all the defenses, *especially* if they can buy a controlling interest/close the activitypub ecosystem/spam rush every site, etc.
