@Black_Flag an interesting concept that we as instance owners become responsible for content on other instances.
When someone sparks up an instance of Mastodon we are all automatically federated with it. Federation is opt out not opt in.
It is unfeasible the way the Fediverse works, for instance admins to be held responsible for anything that anyone might post on any instance that may have just been created 🤔
There was once a late evening I was very *very* tired, so much so that when setting up the coffee maker for the morning, I began pouring the full carafe of water into the electric coffee grinder, while it was plugged in.
It's a wonder I didn't electrocute myself, but I didn't. For even more of a wonder, the coffee grinder survived, once I had taken it apart to dry out completely and then reassembled it. It was never the same though.
@hacks4pancakes So, the way I'd guess they would like this to play out:
1. Successful state porn ID requirements are a model for a federal requirement passed later this month.
2. The federal requirement is a global requirement on US companies, meaning that if you want to host porn, you can't have a US company in the stack.
3. The definition of porn is expanded to include all material that discussed queer and trans people, probably in stages, as well as abortion, contraception, and general reproductive health, at a minimum.
4. It's made clear that the same standard must be met for personal and non-commercial sites, including offline and paper storage, providing an easy avenue for targeted prosecution, especially of queer folks with kids.
5. A requirement is added that all logs must be forwarded to the government for compliance checks, which then provides reasonable for device searches during any other routine interactions with authority, like traffic stops and border crossings.
6. The definition of obscenity (which is what this is — bringing back Comstock is a stated goal) is expanded to include seditious materials, aka left-of-center political material, "critical theory", "DEI", etc., again with the onus placed on companies to positively prove they are not hosting it illegally — again, globally, regardless if the content is legal in the country the company operates in.
It's another looming disaster even if the database is never breached and malware groups never take advantage of it (which they will, obviously).
@thatfatguy_bg @_elena Yup, I've also seen an increasing number of people on things like /r/(?UK)PersonalFinance who have a stay-at-home phone which has most most of their banking apps on.
That way, if they do get mugged, they can only give access to one app which doesn't have any savings etc in.
It's not a bad habit to have, even before all these other changes
@craftykraken I'm hyped for it. I'm attending WWE Survivor Series @ Rogers Arena on Caturday, Nov 30th & after that, I'll have two more weeks of work before my PTO kicks in.
It is almost VanSwiftie weekend and I'm both terrified & excited. Terrified: the traffic & chaos that comes with the Eras Tour. Excited: even though I'm not going, I can still partake in events around the city during that weekend (on my birth month).
Also, I'm going back to Rogers Arena on my birthday for SEA v VAN.
I heard a group of owls hooting in the lowest, breathiest voices I've ever heard owls speak in.
It was creepy. I admit that I had the creeps.
But a half mile later, I noticed the sky brightening toward sunrise and the creeps lifted.
I don't know what species of owl I heard chatting. Is the Great Creepy Owl a species name? It should be.
