@sotolf It is a fun name. However it is worth noting that this name for them did not actually apear in Norway until long after they had died out from mainstream usage. They were most popular between 1870s and 1880s. However that term first appeared in a newspaper in the 1930s.

Back during their heyday they would have been called simply velociped (note the 'c' due to the stronger influence from Danish at the time).

It seems that both velosiped and veltepetter are valid now.

@sotolf I do like the fun names like Veltepetter and Penny Farthing and regularly use them.

I also sometimes call the penny an "ordinary bike".

In English these were the first contrations called "bicycles", so when modern bikes first appeared they were initially called "safety bicycles" and the penny was reffered to as an "ordinary bicycle", which is also why this link works

Well this is interesting from #Strava. If you set your ride as a commute they now suggest how much CO2 was saved over (presumably… a car journey!?).

I have absolutely no idea how accurate this is but the concept is at least interesting as a way to make you think about things and encourage you to do it more.

Of course even if the calculation is any good the problem with this is that I often go on massive detours on the way to and from the office because commuting is one of the highlights of my day.

What I did this morning was pretty much direct but last week for example on one of my commutes home, I unicycled probably 25km (I do not have an exact figure as I clipped off part of the route due to GPS issues).

Plus unicycles are way more energy for the same distance compared to cycling since being fixed wheel you always pedal (even downhill) plus they tend to be pretty low gearing so more revs for the same distance.

Thus actually these calculations will always be waaaay off for me in any case.

Nice cool day and so calm in the centre of #Oslo today, so I did a little lite sightseeing on the way in and… grabbed a 🍩

On my way in to work I passed over #Ankerbrua, which is also sometimes called "#Eventyrbrua" (🇬🇧: "Fairy tale bridge") because it has four bronze sculptures with fairy tale motifs in each corner.

@matt nah. Cargo bike for the win. urban arrow family would be perfect because then you can take kid, and friends and maybe some shopping.

I love these trams in Luxembourg. Not just because they look awesome but because they cost nothing to ride. Public transport is FREE in Luxembourg.

It should be like this is all cities!!!

So I was cycling along the other day in #Oslo (near the Ullevål cycle bridge) and I saw a guy on a #Halfbike (which is not a unicycle, see attached picture).

As far as I knew there were only two halfbikers in Oslo—myself and a friend I convinced to buy one.

So I wave frantically to "my friend", only to realise as he came closer that it is not my friend.

Multiple unicyclists, a rival penny farthing rider and now more halfbikers. What is going on in Oslo? I used to be the only cycling wierdo!
