clacke (clacke@libranet.de)'s status on Tuesday, 22-Aug-2023 20:14:16 JST clacke @ruari @kev I think the display name and actually owning that vehicle pretty much established that. But this solidifies it. -

Velocipede Rider (ruari@velocipederider.com)'s status on Tuesday, 22-Aug-2023 20:14:18 JST Velocipede Rider @sotolf I do like the fun names like Veltepetter and Penny Farthing and regularly use them.
I also sometimes call the penny an "ordinary bike".
In English these were the first contrations called "bicycles", so when modern bikes first appeared they were initially called "safety bicycles" and the penny was reffered to as an "ordinary bicycle", which is also why this link works

Sotolf (sotolf@social.linux.pizza)'s status on Tuesday, 22-Aug-2023 20:14:20 JST Sotolf @ruari Yeah, it's kind of funny how we have to formalities of something that is never used, one formal and one jokey, but it might be because the Penny Farthing does look kind of fun and interesting :)

Velocipede Rider (ruari@velocipederider.com)'s status on Tuesday, 22-Aug-2023 20:14:21 JST Velocipede Rider @sotolf It is a fun name. However it is worth noting that this name for them did not actually apear in Norway until long after they had died out from mainstream usage. They were most popular between 1870s and 1880s. However that term first appeared in a newspaper in the 1930s.
Back during their heyday they would have been called simply velociped (note the 'c' due to the stronger influence from Danish at the time).
It seems that both velosiped and veltepetter are valid now.

Sotolf (sotolf@social.linux.pizza)'s status on Tuesday, 22-Aug-2023 20:14:29 JST Sotolf @ruari That's cool :) There's tonnes of things I don't know about bikes, but they are really nice ways to get around, I also find it kind of fun that the English took the first part of Bicycle to make bike, and we took the last one to make sykkel, kind of like how the Germans took the start of Automobile to make Auto, and we took the last to make bil :)

Velocipede Rider (ruari@velocipederider.com)'s status on Tuesday, 22-Aug-2023 20:14:30 JST Velocipede Rider @sotolf I thing I have sometimes done when I meet people and they ask about the unicycles, is that when they say something like, "Do you own a normal bike?". I reply, "I have an ordinary bike!" 😜

Velocipede Rider (ruari@velocipederider.com)'s status on Tuesday, 22-Aug-2023 20:14:37 JST Velocipede Rider @sotolf See this is where billionaries miss a trick. Rather than buying a social media company and running it into the ground it would be better to buy Grensen 1 and re-open it as a velociped store.

Here is a modern picture of the same location using Google Map's "Street View"
