@MediaActivist if you are open to questioning the idea that online mobs are the best agents of social change in all instances, or that the path to virtue is paved in shame, then you can kinda squint your eyes and see bluesky as the ultimate left-lib circle jerk, doomed to self-spiral as it has nothing to feed on but itself
"the oslo paradigm failed on Oct 7" is some tight propaganda coming from a coalition who assassinated Israel's Oslo signatory, in order to kill the Oslo accords
I can barely watch this journalist reporting at Al-Aqsa hospital, one of Israel's latest bombing and burning of refugees in tents. I worry for the journalist's life and wonder at his bravery, when he knows so many of his colleagues were systematically murdered. My heart breaks for his story of people burned to death after traveling to a bombed out hospital seeking safety. it's all just incomprehensibly brutal, violent, and cruel
ethnic cleansing and genocide to expand national borders, it was always the plan. it’s another Nakba 💔
“Those who remain would be considered combatants — meaning military regulations would allow troops to kill them — and denied food, water, medicine and fuel, according to a copy of the plan given to The Associated Press…
The plan calls for Israel to maintain control over the north for an indefinite period to attempt to create a new administration without Hamas”
Many Americans have no idea that the Palestinians now enduring ethnic cleansing in Gaza are the families who the first Israelis forced out of their homes and communities and into new refugee camps in Gaza. The Israeli settlers then moved into the Palestinian's vacated homes and stole belongings they left behind. This wasn't peaceful. There was bombing and pogroms in some Palestinian villages. Nakba. Gazans have no place to go now because their ancestral homes became Israeli cities.
Most Americans do not know that since a Netanyahu-aligned assassin shot Yitzhak Rabin in 1995 and killed the two state compromise proffered in the Oslo Accords, the far right has controlled the Israeli government.
Most Americans do not know that Itamar Ben-Gvir, a convicted violent racist provocateur, threatened Rabin's life days before he was murdered. Ben-Gvir has served as Israel's Minister of National Security since 2022.
Netanyahu and Ben-Gvir want only a single expanded ethnostate
Americans are ALWAYS told we're on the side of democracy and yet Palestinians are not allowed to vote in Israeli elections, even as they were held in the "open air prison" of apartheid Gaza and the West Bank. Additionally, Netanyahu has been trying to change the structure of Israel's government to dismantle judicial checks to his own power, even though he stands indicted on serious fraud and corruption charges. None of this is about democracy
The brutality of Israel's genocide on Gaza cannot be overstated - snipers repeatedly shooting children in the head, hundreds of journalists targeted and killed, water and power and sanitation facilities systematically destroyed, hospitals and schools and universities systematically destroyed, millions intentionally forced to flee multiple times and live in tents which are then targeted and bombed, millions intentionally denied food and medical aid. all of this is documented.
Gaza is the first genocide many of us are watching in real time (while also being mostly powerless to stop our countries paying for it). I think it’s normal to be more & more frustrated, sad, or angry as this keeps getting, somehow, worse.
remember how horrified we were just a few weeks into it
the thing you don’t want is to get numb to the attempted extermination of a people
some things I learned from Ryan Grim listening to breaking points pod at work yesterday
- billionaire libertarian, Ayn Rand fan, and Lina Khan hater Mark Cuban let slip that he is a sanctioned campaign surrogate for Kamala Harris
- many predicted that the 2020 Abraham Accords, by pointedly leaving Palestinians out of “Israel-Arab normalization”, would leave Hamas no option but violence. the Abraham Accords were signed under Trump but widened under Biden
“[the accords] were criticized by citizens of the four Arab states that signed the accords as well as many citizens of other Arab countries… because they failed to make progress resolving the Palestinian conflict. The criticism increased in May 2021 after violent protests erupted in Jerusalem, Hamas fired rockets into Israel, and Israel retaliated with airstrikes on Gaza. A Fatah member said the Abraham Accords were "one of the reasons" for the October 7attack”
Chomsky putting the Abraham Accords in context in 2021
“For what became the dominant tendency in the Zionist movement, there has been a fixed long-term goal. Put crudely, the goal is to rid the country of Palestinians and replace them with Jewish settlers cast as the “rightful owners of the land” returning home after millennia of exile.”
listening to local radio hosts intentionally avoid the word Covid while publicizing an upcoming flu vaccine fair
to be clear, recent data shows twice as many Americans now being hospitalized for Covid as the flu, and the Covid patients are 35% more likely to die in the hospital
i really can't overstate the silencing impact local covid denial activists had on our public health system. the aggressive large truck convoy, the police department refusing to enforce the assembly's mask mandate, mask protestors in front of borough offices, covid denial bullying on facebook... it all changed local culture so people are afraid to say "covid" let alone actually take any kind of precaution. most people would rather pretend the conflict doesn't exist than stand up to bullies
"In These Times interviewed 18 Jewish professionals with 16 different Jewish organizations across the country, all of whom describe being fired, quitting under pressure, or seeing their roles disappear since October 7 for issues surrounding criticism of Israel or support for a permanent cease-fire. These stories are just a snapshot of what appears to be a growing trend across the Jewish professional world..."
