“Across a sample of 23.5 million votes cast in 42 jurisdictions during the 2016 election, election officials identified 30 incidents of suspected noncitizen voting that were referred for further investigation, comprising 0.0001% of the total votes cast, according to a 2017 Brennan Center study. When Georgia audited its voter rolls in 2022, election officials were unable to identify a single instance of a noncitizen casting a ballot during an election.”
"#Alaska’s top education official relied on generative artificial intelligence to draft a proposed policy on cellphone use in Alaska schools, which resulted in a state document citing supposed academic studies that don’t exist.
The document did not disclose that AI had been used in its conception. At least some of that AI-generated false information ended up in front of state Board of Education and Early Development members"
@MediaActivist hard to escape the individualism baked into us in this society and constantly reinforced. people don't realize they/we are so informed by it at every turn...
love your idea about horizontal networks of mutual aid media - tell us more!
only 20 years ago I traveled all over, did my banking, bought things I needed, checked the weather, did a lot of running and hiking and biking, spent a lot of my time out in the backcountry for my work and for fun, stayed in very close touch with the people I cared deeply about, all without a smart phone or any apps. it was a fine way to live. all in all, the quality of my day was better without pocket computing, and no one was tracking me via ads and apps on a phone
to be very honest, the best mental health I’ve experienced in my life has been when I’m living out of a backpack or sea kayak with a group of students cooking and eating meals together, chatting all day, and sharing the awe and wonder of being out with the animals and stars
when I was doing this kind of work, we often had one clunky sat phone for 15 people for weeks and months on end and rarely had to use it. it was fine
one thing I’ve observed about time is that it does not ever go backward in the ways that I want it to. which makes memory and the act of re-membering (as in putting together) a profoundly important part of life and culture (which wholly contains notions of “science” and “technology”)
I think there’s a reason it feels uniquely good to drift into certain kinds of personal nostalgia, or to sit around and laugh with people who you shared experiences with in the past: we’re wired for memory keeping
middle age (an assumption, my age could end earlier) snuck up on me and presented itself as a time for taking stock on the measure of my life so far. I’m a ruler flipping end over end to measure an era that began with rotary dials and curly wires, that gave me long years out rambling free on the earth, but now has me broadcasting my secrets and locations to any law enforcement or corporate entities who want them. where were the referendums on these changes? when did we choose this
a searing indictment on everything liberal that a *fox news* journalist is the only major mainstream journalist (that i know of) to have spoken up forcefully on the air against Israel's targeted slaughter of professional journalists in Gaza and the West Bank
"On Monday, Al Jazeera correspondent Anas al-Sharif posted a photo from northern Gaza capturing the Israeli military’s brutal depopulation campaign. In the photo, hundreds of Palestinian men, women, and children crowd together on a bombed-out street, carrying their few belongings in plastic bags. They all face the same direction, as if moving in procession, holding their ID cards up in the air to an Israeli soldier just out of view"
@MediaActivist if you are open to questioning the idea that online mobs are the best agents of social change in all instances, or that the path to virtue is paved in shame, then you can kinda squint your eyes and see bluesky as the ultimate left-lib circle jerk, doomed to self-spiral as it has nothing to feed on but itself
"the oslo paradigm failed on Oct 7" is some tight propaganda coming from a coalition who assassinated Israel's Oslo signatory, in order to kill the Oslo accords
I can barely watch this journalist reporting at Al-Aqsa hospital, one of Israel's latest bombing and burning of refugees in tents. I worry for the journalist's life and wonder at his bravery, when he knows so many of his colleagues were systematically murdered. My heart breaks for his story of people burned to death after traveling to a bombed out hospital seeking safety. it's all just incomprehensibly brutal, violent, and cruel
ethnic cleansing and genocide to expand national borders, it was always the plan. it’s another Nakba 💔
“Those who remain would be considered combatants — meaning military regulations would allow troops to kill them — and denied food, water, medicine and fuel, according to a copy of the plan given to The Associated Press…
The plan calls for Israel to maintain control over the north for an indefinite period to attempt to create a new administration without Hamas”
Many Americans have no idea that the Palestinians now enduring ethnic cleansing in Gaza are the families who the first Israelis forced out of their homes and communities and into new refugee camps in Gaza. The Israeli settlers then moved into the Palestinian's vacated homes and stole belongings they left behind. This wasn't peaceful. There was bombing and pogroms in some Palestinian villages. Nakba. Gazans have no place to go now because their ancestral homes became Israeli cities.
Most Americans do not know that since a Netanyahu-aligned assassin shot Yitzhak Rabin in 1995 and killed the two state compromise proffered in the Oslo Accords, the far right has controlled the Israeli government.
Most Americans do not know that Itamar Ben-Gvir, a convicted violent racist provocateur, threatened Rabin's life days before he was murdered. Ben-Gvir has served as Israel's Minister of National Security since 2022.
Netanyahu and Ben-Gvir want only a single expanded ethnostate
Americans are ALWAYS told we're on the side of democracy and yet Palestinians are not allowed to vote in Israeli elections, even as they were held in the "open air prison" of apartheid Gaza and the West Bank. Additionally, Netanyahu has been trying to change the structure of Israel's government to dismantle judicial checks to his own power, even though he stands indicted on serious fraud and corruption charges. None of this is about democracy
The brutality of Israel's genocide on Gaza cannot be overstated - snipers repeatedly shooting children in the head, hundreds of journalists targeted and killed, water and power and sanitation facilities systematically destroyed, hospitals and schools and universities systematically destroyed, millions intentionally forced to flee multiple times and live in tents which are then targeted and bombed, millions intentionally denied food and medical aid. all of this is documented.
