eh, io lo leggevo regolarmente negli anni 80 del secolo scorso, forse i primi 90 :)

(credo di averne in giro uno degli anni 10 del duemila, se non l'ho buttato con il trasloco, ma già era estremamente raro vederli in giro)

Anziché avere un libro (cartaceo o elettronico) tutto disponibile, o una rivista con una puntata di un racconto a puntate, ma anche tanti altri contenuti, si riceve una notifica via email e ci si trova un capitolo da leggere, cosa che spesso si fa in 10-20 minuti, e poi basta fino alla prossima puntata, e per di più lo si fa su un supporto dotato di abbondanti distrazioni

(Ao3 offre anche la possibilità di scaricare l'intera fiction in epub, ma di solito lo faccio solo se sto leggendo qualcosa di già completo, e non sempre, se è un capitolo soltanto lo leggo nel browser e via)

non mi stupirebbe per niente se quella tradizione fosse più che adatta a fornire gli stessi vantaggi della lettura, ma è una tradizione che noi non abbiamo più, e quindi a noi in generale serve leggere

(no, non ho pianto quando un canale youtube che seguo ha pubblicato un video in memoria del gatto che di tanto in tanto appariva sui video, mi era entrato un bruscolo nell'occhio!)

@andre123 @idiran @lasiepedimore @Micolcosta ah, no, decisamente, i giapponesi coprono tutto il mercato, dalle penne da 5 euro a quelle laccate a mano dall'artigiano che passa un'ora in meditazione sotto alla cascata ghiacciata prima di ogni strato sottilissimo di lacca

cosa che per inciso secondo me giustifica i prezzi ampiamente oltre le mie possibilità più delle resine di pregio, per quanto la lavorazione di queste ultime sia più impegnativa di una penna di plastica fatta con lo stampo da produzione di massa

@celesteh @monocles @Steldamm @kkarhan my experience was that hosting an XMPP server lead pretty quickly to having friends and family use it, although there were a couple additional factors:

* family members (who are pretty normal people) got an account on that server, so they only had to install conversations on their phone
* most of our friends are of the FLOSS-nerd variety, and there are enough who are able to run their own server to provide for themselves and for the non-uploading nerds of the group, but everybody had at least some motivation, once the effort required was low
* I'm not on other chat systems (other than IRC, which I'm not going to recommend to family members :) )

I quite like my new fancy #fountainPen, I've loaded it with my go-to ink, and I've been using it semi-regularly.

But then last week I had to fill a couple of forms, in public, and when I got my pen from the beg I started to feel self-conscious and start to worry that maybe normal people aren't going to realize that it's a 16 € pen and not an expensive one, while the transparent plastic of the Preppy should show its price point quite more.

And I very much don't mind being seen as *that* person (the pen snob that won't lower themselves to write with a tool that isn't perfectly selected for their tastes), but I really don't want to be seen as *that other* persn (the pen snob that won't lover themselves to write with a tool that didn't cost at least a few hundred EUR).

Sono decisamente contenta della mia nuova #stilografica fighetta, l'ho caricata con il mio inchiostro da tutti i giorni e la sto usando semi-regolarmente.

Ma in questa settimana ho dovuto compilare un paio di moduli in pubblico, e prendendo la penna dalla borsa ho cominciato a preoccuparmi del fatto che forse le persone normali non si rendono conto che è una penna da 16 € e non una costosa, mentre la plastica trasparente delle Preppy dovrebbe essere più indicativa del prezzo.

E non mi spiace per niente fare la figura di *quella* persona (la snob degli strumenti di scrittura che non si abbassa ad usare niente che non sia stato selezionato con cura per le sue fisse), ma non voglio essere scambiata per *quell'altra* persona (la snob degli strumenti di scrittura che non si abbassa a scrivere con uno strumento che non sia costato come minimo qualche centinaio di euro).

Dear people who use #warpWeightedLoom : how noisy are they?

I've seen videos of human-powered mechanical looms and there is quite a bit of *clack* noise when it's used, and I have some experience with backstrap looms where the moving parts are mostly soft and there isn't a significant noise.

Are the warp weighted ones somewhere in between? do the weights hit each other? Anything else that isn't soft hitting some other hard part?

Would it be possible to have somebody read a book in a room with a few looms in use, for the weavers to listen to, or would it be hard to hear them?

today just after lunch for the second time since they had been installed our batteries were basically full, the sun was still shining, and we still can't send energy to the grid¹, so we run a dishwasher load, a washing machine (cold water, so it didn't help a lot, but that's what I had to wash at the moment) and we still weren't using what the panels were producing, so I had to face The Pile of Stuff That Needs Ironing.

I had been successfully² postponing that for *weeks*!

¹ from installation to being enabled for that it usually takes a couple of months, between bureaucracy and waiting for a tecnicians
² not that it is in any way near the bottom
