valhalla (valhalla@social.gl-como.it)'s status on Tuesday, 30-Apr-2024 15:05:03 JST valhalla @clacke I've just checked¹ and in 1861 Pontecorvo already had ~9k inhabitants, and since then it didn't have a big growth like other Italian communes, so maybe it was at least already around this “big” in the time of the principate.
Looks like a perfectly reasonable size for a mostly independent entity inside geographical Italy :D
What? we're not in the 12th century or whereabouts? details :D
¹ it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pontecor… (in Italian, but it's a graph)

valhalla (valhalla@social.gl-como.it)'s status on Saturday, 06-Apr-2024 13:39:55 JST valhalla @clacke for some things, I think that paying people to work inside existing distributions can also work; it is e.g. already possible to pay somebody to work on maintaining specific debian packages past the time the official support for a certain release has ended (and probably also way past the official *upstream* support has ended).
It has to be managed carefully, but I believe that Freexian / Debian LTS is a good example which could apply to other cases (and is probably completely not suitable for others).
The main advantage here would be that the results of such paid work would be available also for other people, and thus they could be less expensive for each individual customer.

valhalla (valhalla@social.gl-como.it)'s status on Saturday, 30-Mar-2024 04:42:00 JST valhalla @goatsarah as somebody who grew up christian in a non-English speaking country, the name “Good Friday” also perplexes me.
We call it (a literal translation of) Holy Friday, and it's definitely set aside with specific rites and observances, but not celebrated as a joyous occasion, it's the exact opposite.
And I can get that the sound theological reasons may also apply to the name, but really, the good bit of the whole cleansing humanity from the original sin and stuff is the result, not the process, isn't it?

I had half an idea to check, but that involved
a) interacting with a post coming from threads
b) enabling javascript from the threads serverand that's was more than I was willing to do :D

valhalla (valhalla@social.gl-como.it)'s status on Tuesday, 13-Feb-2024 20:46:16 JST valhalla After years of sewing together this morning my sewing machine told me her name!
It happened while she was going through too-many-to-count layers of denim while hemming over a flat felled seam.
I supposed I should respect her privacy and avoid telling which name it is to everybody on the internet.

valhalla (valhalla@social.gl-como.it)'s status on Thursday, 25-Jan-2024 18:41:38 JST valhalla @juliank apparently the conspiracy is so deep that they even send fabric from other places while claiming that they come from Bielefeld :D -

valhalla (valhalla@social.gl-como.it)'s status on Thursday, 25-Jan-2024 18:41:34 JST valhalla all of the fiddly bits of the pattern have been drafted. a pattern with my measurements has been printed. currently cutting and gluing it.
the part down there in the front is BIG. it takes TWO A4 pages.
and I can fit my hand with all fingers spread out in it!
(of course I'm talking about the pattern for the front pockets)

valhalla (valhalla@social.gl-como.it)'s status on Thursday, 25-Jan-2024 18:41:32 JST valhalla fabric has been cut!
and MOAR fabric may have been bought.
I know, I'm supposed not to buy more fabric, but
a) I have a serious lack of trousers
b) the cotton linen I'm using was cheap enough to be used for a wearable mockup, and will probably be useful during the worst of summer, but at 200 g/m² is way too lightweight for a pair of jeans-like trousers.I really hope I have found a dependable source of denim, but I'll find out when it arrives.
technically I've also started sewing, but that was just a couple of seams on the back pockets while I had 10 minutes to spare.

valhalla (valhalla@social.gl-como.it)'s status on Thursday, 25-Jan-2024 18:41:31 JST valhalla The jeans have been almost completely done, I've tried them on and they fit. and I mean *fit*. they are a tiny bit *too* curve-following around the hips, which makes me conflicted between considering them really nice and wanting to make them a bit *less*.
Also, I needed to add a cm or two more to the big bum adjustment; I've done that, and added a little bit of ease on the hips and printed a new pattern.
Now, my denim seems to be lost somewhere near Bielefeld, but I'm confident it will be delivered soon and I have absolutely no doubt that it does exist. :D

valhalla (valhalla@social.gl-como.it)'s status on Thursday, 25-Jan-2024 18:41:29 JST valhalla the denim has been released from Bielefeld and has now reached my home!
it has also been washed, and is currently drying: I hope tomorrow it will be ready for cutting (but I'm not overly confident it will, after just a winter night, unless we get some wind).

and now I have two nicely folded cuts of denim, ready to be used, and I've also already cut a full set of pieces for a pair of jeans.

valhalla (valhalla@social.gl-como.it)'s status on Wednesday, 17-Jan-2024 18:47:02 JST valhalla @tobi82 @clacke yesterday when I read this I did a quick search and I found www.cdc.gov/vaccines/programs/… for the US with prices above 80$ for MRNA vaccines, among the expensive ones.
OTOH, there is www.reuters.com/business/healt… which talks about 19.50 € per dose in 2021 for the EU (but that it was going to increase).
I would read from this that the contract with the pharma is whatever they manage to squeeze out of whoever is buying :(

valhalla (valhalla@social.gl-como.it)'s status on Wednesday, 17-Jan-2024 12:44:56 JST valhalla @gemlog @clacke it's also free here in Italy, as long as you're willing to wait a month or so after the ideal time to get vaccinated, when they decide that the people who should get it because they are at high risk aren't going to, and they might as well use the vaccines they have bought.
Unless you are older, or with certain illnesses, of course, then it's free right from the beginning of the season in mid autumn.
