@hellomiakoda I can agree with the monopoly thing but to say they suck is a stretch. Chrome is actually pretty great at the browser part.

@killyourfm I think the barrier to entry is installation and usage. Most Windows users never install Windows and don't t care to learn how. To expect that same pocket of users to now take their aging laptop that is probably underpowered and put Linux on it is a lot to ask. I think the people that are savvy enough to try and actually care about true hardware ownership are probably already running Linux or have made up their minds to stick with Windows. I am hoping to be completely wrong. What a concept in 2025 huh? Aspiring to be wrong about something.

@hellomiakoda yeah it's a dying breed. I think Lenovo still makes a few P series chonkers with giant power supplies. They are basically portable desktops. Enjoy it.

@hellomiakoda what's the make/model? I think HP had a few laptops with really nice dacs in them about 10 years ago or so.

@hellomiakoda have you considered using an old phone as a DAP or just getting DAP specifically for your library. It's kind of cumbersome but it can be very flexible for what you are trying to do. Most of them just run android and have the Google Play Store so you can install Plex amp and any other streaming players, but also play files off an SD card.

@hellomiakoda yeah, there is a lot of utility in Google Search and Maps that still cannot be replicated anywhere else. I switched email and calendar providers years ago.

@killyourfm @frameworkcomputer I was ready to shit all over this post with rants about capitalism and the ideas of just making their own version of a shitty 12" laptop but then I read the article. Holy cow this may be the neatest little guy. I'm not sure how well my big caveman hands would do typing on this but damned if I don't want one.

I'm sure there are ways to mitigate this. @wiredfire said VPN, that is one. Temporarily changing zip tied to your Google account and time zone on your phone is another.

Google will need to eventually provide some type of secure push a notification to ask, "Hey are you in the UK now? Cool, try this app." If that is what you want....
