@huxley @sabik @chrisisgr8 @hailey I think the paper on this is proposing to make it crash reliably on that point of entering UB land, and not allowing yolo behavior.

The same problem we have already in many places. If allowed in, they'll decide what can and cannot be shown. When they defederate with your instance, you'll be missing most people, and when they break rules you're not going to defederate them, because it's like sawing off the branch you're sitting on.
Break the link proactively to prevent them from getting to such a point.

Peter Bindels (dascandy42@mastodon.social)'s status on Wednesday, 27-Mar-2024 06:21:54 JST Peter Bindels @aral @Edent Interesting, close to what I have in mind.
Missing:
- Replacement for the tether your phone has to Google/Apple
- Replacement for what people rely on from major tech companies: whatsapp (IM, calls), email, calendar, address book etc. Can't drop whatsapp when there's no usable replacement. And up to a point, missing an alternative mobile phone OS. But I can understand limiting scope.

Peter Bindels (dascandy42@mastodon.social)'s status on Wednesday, 27-Mar-2024 04:59:27 JST Peter Bindels @Edent What if you were to run that on a tiny device that's connected to your internet connection, with a global bounce server / address for people without incoming connections? Make the devices link directly to each other, make your own hardware link to your home server.
VPN to your home from anywhere, use IM / phone / cloud storage that's at your home. No giant companies needed at all.

Can you help me like it less? I like to learn about the real background behind things where possible.

Peter Bindels (dascandy42@mastodon.social)'s status on Sunday, 21-Jan-2024 09:54:11 JST Peter Bindels Apparently there's a soundtrack of the movie too, and it includes all classical music, plus Singing in the Rain. I wonder if it includes the interspersed "OW"s too... thinking of that song now always has those.

Peter Bindels (dascandy42@mastodon.social)'s status on Friday, 19-Jan-2024 01:51:44 JST Peter Bindels @inthehands @mekkaokereke I've never understood the US grading system with everybody being graded on a fixed curve from A+ to F. It implies that if you're in a class of idiots you don't even have to do much but you can't score meaningfully high despite being a potential genius, and in a class of absolute geniuses you're never going to get anything but an F, even if you're really smart.
When an F can be really smart and an A+ can be somebody not competent... what value does it even have?

Actual news sites would be able to be angry at Google for stealing their content. Now Google is stealing AI content, and the AI is stealing their content - so it's not Google taking their stuff, see?
It's like money laundering but with copyright and IP.
