Once, again, I am in search of a new #Mastodon #instance, since the administrator of dice.camp hasn't been seen or heard from in five months. I don't believe that bodes well. My desires:

* Character limit higher than 500.
* Protection for LGBTQ+ and ND individuals.
* BLM, Trans Rights, etc.
* No Fascists
* No bloody stupid restrictions like "call politicians by their real names".
* Healthy gamer/fandom community.
* Not mastodon.social

Any recommendations?

@binarydigit @britt I caught a similar ban from Zuckerville several months ago. No reason, no recourse, instant appeal denial. I've done well here on Mastodon since then, but it still rankles. I'm very sorry this happened to you.

@hellomiakoda ...yeah, there were already names for that kind of music. Because they existed before / outside of the Weather Channel. New Age, soft jazz, etc. Yes, WC was great; I'd turn it on just for the music. But that music wasn't there *because* of the channel.

Some stuff is going around about #Fediverse and #Mastodon right now, about "don't join a big server, join a small one" and so on.

Let's be real. Onboarding and using Masto, at least, is not what it could be right now. It's designed by and made for techie people. It's easy and simple *for them*. It is not easy or simple *for average people*, who want, are used to, and need more simplified and automated interaction.

For example: finding a starting instance, and changing instances.

The website being recommended by some folks to find a starting instance funnels people toward mastodon.social, which is the largest instance that's causing the kerfuffle in the first place. This needs to be changed. The process *needs* to be easier *for average non-techie people*. The very concepts of instances and federation need to be better-explained and illustrated to people used to centralized social media.

Changing instances is currently my personal bugaboo. "Go here, download all this, do this, this and this, then go over here, do this, this and this, upload all this, and sit on your thumb and wait and it *might* all work" is neither simple nor easy for somebody who isn't into tech. It's a list of anxiety-inducing failure points that will drive off a lot of people.

All this shit needs to be improved. Migration needs to be automated.

It's the same problem as #Linux : ordinary people do not want to get their hands dirty. They want it to Just Work. Just because everything is a snap to the techie folks who invented it means nothing. Worse is not better. "lulz git gud noob" is not a solution.

Stop designing Masto and the Fediverse for yourselves. Please. Design it for *everyone*.

@Tarrenvane @VulcanTourist @match @jeffowski @actuallyautistic For me, it was school, especially middle school (grades 5-8). The kids were *evil*. Be the slightest bit uncool, get buried in suffering and abuse. Left me with a lifetime of lingering wounds.
