Mega Zoom calls have been a major driver of support and fundraising for Kamala Harris's presidential campaign, starting with a group of 44,000 Black women who raised $1.6 million, just a few hours after Harris launched her bid for the White House. @19thnews spoke to some of the organizers and participants of calls for South Asian women, Latinas and white women. Next up: White Dudes for Harris, and the cross-coalition Women for Harris, both of which calls take place today (Monday).

@seanbala Every time someone comments there's a show that we'd forgotten about and loved — "The Afterparty" season one was fab. Had not heard about the cancelation of "Schmigadoon." What a shame!

The Ohio Supreme Court ruled today that consumers cannot expect boneless chicken wings to actually be free of bones, rejecting a suit by a man who suffered serious medical complications after getting a bone stuck in his throat. Justice Joseph T. Deters wrote: "A diner reading ‘boneless wings’ on a menu would no more believe that the restaurant was warranting the absence of bones in the items than believe that the items were made from chicken wings, just as a person eating ‘chicken fingers’ would know that he had not been served fingers.” The dissenting justices called Deters' reasoning "utter jabberwocky." Here's more from the AP.

Bob Newhart, the iconic comedian and sitcom star, has died at age 94. Born in 1929 in a Chicago suburb, he trained as an accountant and worked as a copywriter before unexpectedly having a hit comedy album at nearly 30. He went on to sell millions of albums, star in two hit sitcoms, win three Grammy Awards and two Emmys, and the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. Here's NBC's tribute to him.

Maybe voters in this poll peeked? We thought turnip was a great decoy answer, but most voters spotted it as the word with a clear etymology. It has origins in Old English (turn, for its shape, as in to turn on a lathe) and Latin (næp, from napus, which means... turnip). Some great discussion in the comments from @ancientsounds who pointed out that the term "proper words" is not used in linguistics, nor helpful — "Apart from in the term 'proper noun', the word 'proper' is deprecated in linguistics (in English publications) because it suggests some value-laden judgement about words, and we avoid judgmental descriptions of any aspect of any language," they explained. @maj and @tobiaspatton mulled the term "proper" — whether it came from the French or Middle English "propre." And @queenofnewyork and @luc both pointed out that they had read the poll the opposite way from how we'd intended, choosing the "proper" word rather than the "improper" one, whatever that means. All in all... not our finest poll! Next up, we're back on steadier and less academic ground with a simple survey of tea and coffee preferences.

In 1811, the Woodland Plantation House in Louisiana was the site of one of the largest slave revolts in U.S. history. Now, for the first time, the home is under Black ownership thanks to twin sisters Jo and Joy Banner and their non-profit, the Descendants Project. Here's NPR's story about the history of the house, and the Banner sisters' plans for its future. “Our mission is to eradicate the legacies of slavery so for us, it's the intersection of historic preservation, the preservation of our communities, which are also historic, and our fight for environmental justice,” says Joy Banner.

More than one billion animals are kept as pets around the world. But bioethicist Jessica Pierce says that might not be great for our furry, feathered and scaly friends. In this story for @time, she discusses the potential harms of pet ownership, including whether it's ok to buy and sell animals and use them for our own gratification, the anguish of captivity, and the climate impacts of pet-keeping. She also posits a new way forward, in which human-animal ties are mutual and freely chosen. It's a very thought-provoking article; tell us in the comments what you think.

Reports of the death of Noam Chomsky appear to be untrue. The New Statesman and Jacobin published obituaries for the 95-year-old linguist, philosopher, activist and intellectual, who is known to have had a stroke last year, however Cauê Seigner Ameni, editor of Jacobin Brasil tweeted that he has spoken to Chomsky's wife, Valerie, and he is alive. The New Statesman has now taken down its obituary, while Jacobin has given its tribute a new headline: "Let’s Celebrate Noam Chomsky, the Intellectual and Moral Giant."

Gabby Petito went missing in the summer of 2021 and was later found to have been murdered by her fiancé. Her disappearance generated enormous publicity, which at the time was described by activists as "Missing White Woman Syndrome," where white crime victims get more attention than non-white ones. Now, Gabby's family and the foundation they created in her honor are campaigning for every missing person to get the same level of publicity as she did. Here's an interview from People magazine with her father Joe.

If you have a Samsung washing machine, you'll probably be familiar with its self-satisfied "I'm finished" chime — the 40-second jingle that plays when your wash cycle is complete. It's a version of Schubert's "Die Forelle," which was composed in 1817. Now, it's sparked an absurd copyright abuse flag on YouTube, with a Twitch streamer claiming his play-through of Fallout was demonetized because his washing machine finished while he was streaming. Seemingly YouTube's automatic scan had detected the washing machine chime as a song called "Done," which was uploaded to YouTube by a musician known as Audego nine years ago. Albino suggested that YouTube had potentially allowed Audego to make invalid copyright claims for years. Here's more from @arstechnica

Just 18% of respondents to this poll say they watch pretty much everything Marvel does, with 42% dipping in and out and almost as many (36%) saying they're done with the MCU. What's with the disillusionment? People don't want to feel like keeping up with the movies is their part-time job. "I don't want to have to do homework before I watch entertainment," @billyjoebowers said. Fingers crossed future MCU projects will be extra credit, not compulsory.

Courtney Gore, the co-host of a right-wing online talk show, won a seat on a Texas school board on the basis that she would undo leftist indoctrination and get rid of educational materials with inappropriate messages about sexuality and race. Then she took office and actually read the curriculum, finding that the subject matter simply taught children “how to be a good friend, a good human.” The Texas Tribune talked to her about why she ran for office, what she thinks is behind the push to take over school boards, and the backlash she's faced since speaking out against the ultra-right element of the Republican party.

AI-generated books on Amazon now have the potential to kill people, as they've moved into the realm of mushroom foraging. Guides have popped up like, well, mushrooms, packed with information that makes no sense and could easily be dangerous, illustrated with structures that are "the mycological equivalent of a picture of a hot blond with six fingers and too many teeth," writes Vox's Constance Grady. There are more than 180,000 historical markers throughout America, and many of them tell only partial truths. Over the past year, NPR has analyzed crowdsourced data to uncover some of those errors. Many were strange, funny or silly — like a sign that marks the home of a world-famous Santa Claus school in Albion, New York, and a marker in Arizona that pays tribute to a donkey that drank beer. But many paint a fractured version of history: 70% of markers that mention plantations do not mention slavery, and there are 500 markers that describe the Confederacy in glowing terms. Here's more.

When Spotify entered the podcast world, audio producer Alex Sujong Laughlin was wary — and with good reason, since back when she was a social media editor working at The Washington Post, she saw the devastating effect some private tech companies have had on media and journalism. She's sad to be proved right. "Spotify — along with many other companies — wants to create a closed ecosystem for the creation, distribution, and consumption of podcasts, bypassing RSS technology altogether because that would allow them to harvest more listener data to leverage with advertisers," she writes in this story for Defector. Luckily, she says it's not too late to take back our feeds. "You don’t have to understand the technology of RSS to choose to listen to your podcasts on an open app. You can just choose to do it." Thirty-five WGA members are asking Sesame Workshop for industry standard raises, improvements to residuals and more. Picketing outside the New York City office could start as soon as next Wednesday.
