@thomasfuchs I’m a little puzzled by all the people acting surprised that he works in PR — I don’t read his articles regularly but when I read some in the past he seemed to be pretty transparent about that.

It’s not necessarily a good thing but I don’t see how there’s been any dishonesty about it.

@thomasfuchs I switched away from one particular gem because of precisely this sort of update cycle. Multiple releases per week; something like sixty in a single year, including three backwards-incompatible major versions. For a pagination library.

But also I think tools like Dependabot are part of the problem; it’s promoting the idea that installing updates ASAP is the correct and normal approach.

@thomasfuchs I also associate it with startup CEO types on LinkedIn (and yes, I do recognise that there’s a significant overlap).

When it’s not specifically from a programmer I tended to interpret it as someone who wasn’t actually able to explain what they contributed (beyond LinkedIn posts), and so had to adopt a vague waffly title for themselves instead.

@badnetmask yes agreed. Why would “this guy made it” be interesting enough to be a selling point?

(I feel like maybe the very fact that he’s built his own distro suggests his opinions on distros can be dismissed, if nothing else. Feels ego-driven.)

@dalias @manawyrm @marcan Does anybody actually specifically need one type of suspend over the other? Because it seems pretty reasonable to me to assume that most people just care about suspend being ‘good enough’ and don’t care about how it’s done.

And given limited developer capacity it seems pretty reasonable therefore to focus on the thing that’s easiest to improve, not on the thing people think they want.

Increasingly finding that #AI-generated images on a blog post lowers my opinion of the author — not (just) because of a principled anti-AI stance but also simply because it’s rubbish.

If you’re happy decorating your work with generated garbage I’m just going to assume your standards are that low for everything you do.

@AnarchoNinaWrites I’m just sort of inclined to think that any law, then and now, is twisted to suit the interests of those with the most power. I absolutely believe that if the other branches of government wanted to charge the president with whatever crime, they’d find a way to do so, regardless of what twisted and contradictory legal justifications they had to find for it.

Which is exactly why, as you say, depending on "but it's sedition” is futile. Law is an instrument of class power.

@thomasfuchs actually, thinking further, I think even if they weren’t salaried, there’s a certain level of ethical necessity even when doing something as a hobby.

I don’t want to be absolutist here. But if someone is happy to make stuff for free, for fun, and yet consistently objects to making it accessible, or safe, etc, then I’m suspicious. Nobody is forcing anyone to do free work, but why is the free work suddenly a problem only when it’s diversity-related?

@only_ohm @thomasfuchs I certainly can’t expect people to work on things in their free time that they don’t want to purely for my (or anyone else’s benefit). That’s not really the thing I’m objecting to, though.

I don’t have the impression that most of these argumentative types are actually developers on Mastodon. If they were, their objections could be taken a lot more seriously.

@thomasfuchs One kind of reply that particularly irks me is the universalised claim that nobody wants feature X, despite a large number of people who keep asking for it.

(or e.g., “the community frowns on …” as if those who want it aren't actually part of the community.)
